The Evolution Store, New York City
This boutique is located in Soho, but it feels like an off-shoot of the Natural History Museum. They carry everything from skulls and anatomical models to minerals like agate and crystals. The store even has its own Entomology Department, so the array of insects, from butterflies to scorpions, available for purchase is astounding. I'm dying to take my nephews here - it's a cornucopia of wacky stuff and science memorabilia.
What to buy: Brazilian agate bookends, decorative shells and corals, illustrated botanical posters - and then all the wacky stuff like anatomical models, skull paraphernalia, exact replicas of various great white sharks' jaws, replicas of bird eggs, or jewelry featuring teeth, fossils, and insects.
What to pay: Expensive, but rare and certified products
Even for NYC this is a unique store. It has a wide variety of items for sale that you would generally see in museums: dried and mounted butterflies and beetles, bones and skulls both animal and human, shark teeth, shells, preserved dead baby sharks, primitive art, and many other off-beat things. I'm not sure you would actually buy anything here, but it makes for an interesting visit. Most kids will love it.
