Ice Skating Among the Skyscrapers
There are a few places one can go ice skating in NYC during the winter months. One of these is in Bryant Park directly behind (west) of the NY Public Library. The setting is of large buildings in an open area with tall trees directly surrounding the rink area. In the weeks before Christmas a holiday market is held there with many booths offering gifts and crafts in the area surrounding the rink.
The rink is open from 8:00am to 10:30pm starting in late October and runs through mid-January. Entrance to the ice is free if you bring your own skates. Otherwise you can rent skates for $7.50 (in 2005) for as long as you can bear it. They also offer lessons and have a bag check as well.
Equipment: Skates, warm clothes, gloves/mittens, etc.

Ice skating in Bryant Park
We came upon this gorgeous park whilst walking, and absolutely loved it!
It being the second week after Christmas, the stalls were still up, although empty. There was a huge Christmas tree up still, with shiny stars hanging from the trees, and little glittering wintery lights everywhere.
In the centre of the park was a temporary ice skating rink with quite a few people ice skating, young and old, all sizes.
It reminded us of London in winter at this time, when temporary ice rinks are scattered throughout the city, and are very popular with the locals and visitors.
We stopped to watch them and have a hot drink. Then continued on our way.
I have more info about this park in my Bryant Park Things to Do tip. I have focussed on the sport aspect in this tip

Ice Skating - Central Park
While visiting NYC, my boyfriend and I took a long stroll in Central Park and came across the Ice Skating rink, which we had to stop off at. If your in Central Park, or even just NYC for that matter, this is a fun activity that you've got to to at least once! The setting was unbelievable...The trees suppounding the rink, a well as the backdrop of numerous beautiful buildings was amazing...and getting out there on the ice was very fun!
Equipment: Once entering the facility, you need to rent skates as well as a locker for all of your belongings.
