Extreme Mountain Biking in The Big Apple

    by GNSK8 Updated Apr 4, 2011

Fllowing my friend around on a mountain bike through NYC was as extreme as it gets! He was a bike courrier so he had his game down.If you thought the taxi drivers were scary before wait till you ride a bike down the road with them. It feels like a very real game of FROGGER.

Equipment: Mountain Bikes are recommended so you can conquer the many obsticals along the way!.

    Biking The Rail Trails

Many people don't know that they can grab their bikes on a weekend morning and take the Metro North train to the suburbs! For the price of a rail ticket and a cheap "bike pass," Metro North will transport you to some of the most beautiful riding on the east coast!

Try, for instance, the train ride to Cold Spring (Hudson Line) and bike from Cold Spring Harbor across the Bear Mountain Bridge, up Storm King pass to West Point, then back across the Hudson via the Newburgh bridge, then finish by following the river down again to Cold Spring, where you can have a beer and a good meal at any number of fantastic and colorful taverns dotting this tiny turn-of-the-century river town.

Alternatively, get off in Bronxville (Harlem Line) and ride the South County and North County trail system, which follows the old Putnam County rail line for up to 40 miles north on perfectly maintained trails that are totally protected from traffic!

    Equipment: Bike and water!
