Cleopatra's Needle
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cleopatra's Needle is an Egyptian monument (obelisk) located in Central Park. It was presented to America by Egypt, and was set up in Central Park in 1881. It is made from red granite and was originally erected at Heliopolis (c.1475 B.C.) I especially wanted to see it as I am interested in Egyptian monuments, and it seemed so out of place in Central Park!!

Columbus Circle is located at the South West corner of Central Park and the end of Central Park West. It is home to one of the main entrances to Central Park, the Trump International Hotel and the new 80-storey Time Warner skyscrapers. In the centre of Columbus Circle is a statue of the explorer Christopher Columbus. There is also this impressive looking Globe outside the Trump Hotel.

    Federal Hall
  • Tip Rating:
  • Federal Hall is an impressive looking building, located in the heart of Wall Street. It is where George Washington was inaugurated as President back in 1789. There is a statue of him out the front, standing proudly and keeping an eye on the action on Wall Street. Entry is free, so at least pop in and have a look at the beautiful marbled interior.

Grand Central Terminal: Not your average train station!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Grand Central Station is Manhattan's main train interchange. It was first opened in 1913, and has recently been renovated to its former glory. It is fabulous! I have never seen such a station. There is a huge marble central hall, with atrium dining areas. There is also a large food hall below this and numerous shops and great bars. It is certainly a whole lot more than just a train station - put it on your Must See list!

Wall Street: New York Stock Exchange & Wall Street
  • Tip Rating:
  • How often do you hear about the New York Stock Exchange and Wall Street on the news - it is something I have been hearing about all my life, so we just had to stop by and take a photo. The Stock Exchange if a fabulous looking building. Ok, we didn't actually go inside, but we hung about in Wall Street looking as if we knew something others didn't!!

    Manhattan at Night
  • Tip Rating:
  • Manhattan is a beautiful city at night, with all the buildings lit up. We were lucky enough to time our trip on the Staten Island Ferry, so that the sun had set and on our way back to Manhattan all the buildings were lit up - just magnificent. Also, make sure you check out the Chrysler Building at night - gorgeous! Then there's Times Square. Just take a walk basically and don't forget your camera.

Chrysler Building: The most beautiful building in NYC?
  • Tip Rating:
  • My favourite building in New York would have to be the gorgeous Chrysler Building. It was built by Walter P. Chrysler, the car manufacturer, as a status symbol and completed in 1930. It was the highest building in the world for a year, until the Empire State Building was completed. It is currently the 23rd tallest. The Chrysler building is one of the last skyscrapers in the Art Deco style. There are gargoyles (eagles) leaping out towards the top of the building that depict Chrysler car ornaments and the tall spire is modeled on a radiator grille. We had a look in the lobby - impressive Art Deco - and felt envious of the office workers heading up to their desk in one of the worlds most beautiful buildings.

    Guggenheim Museum: Real pretty lookin'
  • Tip Rating:
  • My husband was desperate to get to the Guggenheim Museum. Not because he is a big art fan, but because he is into architecture and design - and the Guggenheim building is fabulous to look at. After a walk through Central Park, we popped out onto 5th Avenue and walked up to check out the museum. Just look at it - you can't help but be impressed by this unique building. Worth a look even if you just take some photos of the outside like we did, though I hear the art inside is pretty spectacular too!!

    City Hall
  • Tip Rating:
  • New York's City Hall is the oldest in the nation that still houses its original governmental functions. It was constructed from 1803 to 1812 and is a fabulous looking building, just like I imagined it should look......or perhaps knew it looked from television! An easy way to see it is to take some time out in City Hall Park, and take some photos through the trees like I did!

    Radio City Music Hall
  • Tip Rating:
  • Radio City Music Hall is the largest indoor theatre in the world. It has been used for stage shows, movies, concerts and special events since in opened in 1932. It is one of those fabulous places that I have always heard about - "so and so played at Radio City Music Hall" etc. We were in the area at the wrong time to do a guided tour, so had to make do with photos of the exterior. When I get back to New York one day I would love to see a show/concert here. Would love to hear from anyone who has!
