St Patrick's Cathedral: It's a big'un!
  • Tip Rating:
  • St Patrick's Cathedral is a hugh cathedral located in the centre of Manhattan. It is the seat of the archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, and was completed in 1878. Built of white marble in a gothic style, it is quite a spectacular structure and is the largest Catholic cathedral in the United States. We where very impressed with its grandeur, and popped inside to have a look around a spend a quiet moment in contemplation.

    Wall Street: Big Boy!
  • Tip Rating:
  • The "charging bull" of Wall Street is quite a sight. It sits in the middle of Broadway, just down from Wall Street. This huge bronzed bull first appeared in 1989 and is now a favourite for tourists (like me!!) Rumour has it that if you rub it's testicles you will have good luck in the stock market!! Eeeeewwwwww!!

    Dakota Building
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Dakota Building is an apartment block on the Upper West Side, across the road from Central Park. It is famous as it was the former home of John Lennon. In fact, it is here on the sidewalk that he was shot back in 1980. Not really a happy tourist attraction....

Flatiron Building: Every town should have one!
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Flatiron Building was New Yorks first skyscraper, completed in 1902. Apparently at the time, New Yorkers were scared it was going to fall down!! It is a fabulous triangular tower and is only six feet wide at its rounded narrow end. The design really makes it stand out as one of the truely special New York buildings. It is a surprise when you are walking up 5th Avenue and you come across it - very cool!

    Metropolitan Opera House
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Metropolitan Opera House is located in the Lincoln Centre for the Performing Arts complex. It opened in September 1966 in it's current location, but the original Opera House dates back to 1883. The building itself is quiet spectacular inside and out. We spent plenty of time taking photos of the impressive staircase in the lobby, plus more of the outside of the building and the fountain.

    Rockefeller Center: Rockefeller Center
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Rockefeller Center is sometimes called a 'city within the city'. Its beautiful Art Deco Buildings are connected to each other via an underground concourse called the Catacombs - there are shops down there, but I didn't feel the pull to browse, as it is kind of dark and sterile down there, and there is much more happening above ground! There is a sunken plaza with cafes, plus a really pretty promenade with a fountain and, when we were there, loads of tulips. The Rockefeller Center is famous as the home of NBC Studios and also for the huge Christmas trees they have here each year. We really enjoyed sitting in the sun here and doing some people watching.

Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island: The Lady herself
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Statue of Liberty is the most recognisable icon of New York. She stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbour. It was a gift from the French government for the 100th birthday of America's Independence. At the time of our visit to New York, you were not able to go inside the statue, so instead we caught the (free) Staten Island Ferry, which passes close by. It has since been open to the public, book tickets at: www.statuereservations.com It was a little difficult to take photos, but so exciting to see her, especially with the sun setting in the back ground. It gave me shivers.....though that could have had something to do with the cold night air!!

    Time Warner Building
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Time Warner Building, at Columbus Circle was opened in early 2004. It is a huge twin-towered complex that consists of retail space, offices including the headquarters of Time Warner, a jazz facility for the nearby Lincoln Centre, a Mandarin Oriental hotel, CNN TV studios and 225 condominium apartments. We had a browse in some of the fancy shops here and then relaxed on the designer couches looking out on to Central Park.

    Woolworth Building
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Woolworth Building was built from 1911 to 1913, and was commissioned by Frank W. Woolworth, the owner of the five and dime chain. It was the world's tallest building from 1913 - 1930. It has 29 story's at the bottom and a further 30 story square tower rising from the center of the front. The whole building is covered with a cream-coloured terracotta. It is quite spectacular, and one of the buildings that makes New York so fabulous!

    City Hall Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • The park at City Hall was really beautiful when we were there in early spring. Loads of flowers, some squirrels and plenty of New Yorkers enjoying their lunch break in the sun. There is also a nice fountain and plenty of benches to relax on. We sat for a while and did some people watching, then headed off to check out the Brooklyn Bridge!
