 | New York City Things To Do | Tips 41 - 50 of 5909 | | | | | | Brooklyn: Fulton Ferry Landing | Tip Rating: | | | | |
Fulton Ferry Landing began its life as a rowboat crossing in 1642. George Washington was the most famous person who passed through this way when in 1776, he led his troops cross the river after losing the Battle of Long Island. He did not just leave his footsteps, his inspirational quotes were engraved on the floor of the pier. In addition to Washington's words, you can read an excerpt of Walt Whitman's Crossing Brooklyn Ferry inscribed on the railing. Walt Whitman's words still ring true today as it was in 1856. "...Just as you feel when you look on the river and sky, so I felt; Just as any of you is one of a living crowd, I was one of a crowd; Just as you are refresh'd by the gladness of the river and the bright flow, I was refresh'd; Just as you stand and lean on the rail, yet hurry with the swift current, I stood, yet was hurried; Just as you look on the numberless masts of ships, and the thick-stem'd pipes of steamboats, I look'd. ... Flow on, river! Flow with the flood-tide, and ebb with the ebb-tide! Frolic on, crested and scallop-edg'd waves! Gorgeous clouds of the sun-set! drench with your splendor me, or the men and women generations after me; Cross from shore to shore countless crowds of passengers! Stand up, tall masts of Manhattan! Stand up, beautiful hills of Brooklyn! Throb, baffled and curious brain!" Leave a Comment Directions: Take the 2 or 3 to Clark St, or the A or C to High St, then cross over East River by foot on the Brooklyn Bridge, this way you can have many good experiences roll into one.

 | | | | Empire State Building: The Beacon | Tip Rating: | | | | |
Its exact location is on Fifth Ave, bordering W. 33rd St. and W. 34th Sts. Its exact area is Midtown. Its borough is Manhattan. Its city is NYC. It is local. However, mentioning Empire State Building and it is no longer local. It would be almost impossible to find one person on earth who has not heard of it, has not seen the picture of it, has not dreamt of seeing it, had not been in awe in its presence, or had not stared at the wonderful cities spread out and below when they were on its Observatory. For most tourists, this is one of the two things they know about New York City -- Empire State Building and Statue of Liberty. For most people, this is the symbol of America. There is no other place and no other image that is more American than The Lady with the Torch, and The Spire that Reaches the Sky. The history of Empire State Building, its facts and factoids can be read a million times over on the Net so I'm not going to bore you with it here. What I will tell you is although I don't consider myself a tourist, although I have been to Manhattan and have seen Empire State Building many times, although I have been up to the 86th floor so often I should have a season pass, there had not been one time when I didn't find my breath taken away when I caught the glimpse of it. Doesn't matter where I was, on the streets or in an airplanes, I have always searched for it. It is not the location that counts. It is not the shape that counts. It is not the height that counts. What counts is its image, for it is the beacon for all to search, to feel that life will go on no matter what had happened. | | | | Washington Square Park: Image Of A Neighborhood | Tip Rating: | | | | |
Located in the heart of Greenwich Village, Washington Square Park used to be a popular hang out of beatniks in the 60s, then vagrants and drug dealers in the 70s and 80s. In the '90s, the combined effort of local communities and Mayor Giuliani's police crackdown policy brought the resurgence of NYC in whole and Washington Square Park in particular. As NYC being named the safest large city in America, Washington Square Park enjoys its good image again. Nowadays, it’s crowded with everyone, from local mothers pushing strollers to NYU administrators enjoying lunch al fresco, from students lounging between classes to legal vendors selling their wares, from local dog owners with their pets in towed to chess players convene regularly over the tables painted with Chinese chessboards. The well-designed park appeals to people of all ages and lifestyles, and encourages activity for families and individuals alike. Leave a Comment Directions: Washington Square Park is bounded by Waverly Place, W. 4th street, University Place and MacDougal Street. Take the A, B, C, D, E, F, or Q to Washington Square.

 | | | | Chrysler Building: The Metal Crown In The Sky | Tip Rating: | | | | |
Since the day it was presented to the public's scrutinizing eyes, Chrysler Building has always been loved, even in the dark of the Depression years. It has always looked as if it should be built in the future, centuries ahead of whatever year in which its contemporaries stuck. The future presents new beginnings and optimistic dreams; Chrysler Building emitted that feeling 75 years ago and still hands it out now, especially since after New York skyline was altered. It's a building with an air of both majestic and magic combined. In the daylight, its crown gleams in the sun, its spire pierces the sky. At night, the illuminated triangular windows lit up like seven rows of fish scales shimmering in the dark water. There is never a lack of movement in its appearance; it always seems ready to take off toward another galaxy, another future, another time and place. | | | | Skyline And Cityscape | Tip Rating: | | | | |
The skyline and the landscape of NYC cannot be mistaken with any city in the world. Los Angeles just does not have the right character. Hong Kong is just a jumble mass of many buildings trying to compete for a tiny patch of sky without the harmony in co-existence. Chicago is the closest to New York, but not quite there. San Francisco is too poetic; it cannot be compared with NYC, not because it is inferior but because it is unfair and illogical to compare apple and orange. Who else is on the same league with NY? No one. It is not the height or the architecture that matters, but also what emits from the height and the architecture. It is not how the building transforms the sky and the horizon, but how it adds to the sky and the horizon. Anywhere you go, when you see a NYC skyline, you would know immediately what it is, where it is, what is around it, in front of it, behind it, and what is going on at that time of the year in that area. Everything on that skyline is not just a local landmark or a national landmark but also an international landmark, physically and emotionally. Who can make that same claim? No one. Leave a Comment

 | | | | Times Square: What Ever Happened To The Old Times Square? | Tip Rating: | | | | |
Times Square had lost its reputation as a place to find drugs and loose women (and men) long ago. For a decade now, it is no longer a dangerous-to-your-life neighbourhood in a badder-than-bad city. Under the combined force of BID (Times Square Business Improvement District) and Rudolph Giuliani’s tough love regime, Times Square has become one of the brightest and safest areas in NYC. This is the home of Good Morning America, Toys "R" Us, Virgin Records, NASDAQ, Condé Nast, Ernst and Young, Lehman Brothers, Morgan Stanley, MTV, The New York Times, Reuters, Viacom, etc. This is now a family playground instead of a sin corner of the world. Come to Times Square and spend money. Come to Times Square and gawk at the light, the height, and the signs. Come to Times Square and join the Armed Forces. Everyone is at Times Square, everything is clean, every light is on, and y'all will feel at home and safe.
