The park in Winter by pigletsmom Walk through the park and find hidden treasures and fabulous views of the city. The park is filled with sculptures, lakes. ponds, pretty grassy fields and interesting places to explore. Stop by the Central Park zoo, it's very interesting and has been a landmark for years. If you're short on time, catch a carriage ride in front of the plaza hotel in uptown, and take in the park's lovely scenery that way. Very festive and romantic at night. Leave a Comment

Sheep's Meadow by clairegeordio Central Park is a must see activity as it is so relaxing, with many different parts to see eg Sheep's meadow, Belevedere Castle, the reservoir, Strawberry Fields (John Lennon memorial), Bethesda fountain.......... We spent a full day here and went back on our last day as well and just chilled out by the fountain. There was a great street artist there who sang and played the violin in a very entertaining way. Please look at my New York travel pages for a picture and many more New York photos Leave a Comment

Central Park is filled with remarkable statues placed by various societies, here the Pilgrim placed by The New England Society of New York at the E 72nd Street entrance to the park commemorating the landing of the pilgrims on 21 Dec 1620. The statue is bronze on a granite pedestal, like many in the park. The pedestal contains reliefs of The Mayflower, the Bible and Sword, and the Crossbow with arrows. It is set atop a hill very popular for winter sledding. Leave a Comment

I find the most remarkable feature of Central Park to be the 36 bridges and arches that carry pedestrian and vehicular traffic through and especially across the park. Olmstead and Vaux anticipated the growth of the city to surround the park even though at the time of planning the city only extended to the 34th Street region. They created a system allowing for separate roads for all types of traffic and obviated the need for unsightly intersections by using arches and bridges to carry traffic on different levels. For instance, the transverse roads are all submerged and in large part obscured from the park level. Unlike European parks, the bridges are hidden and inconspicuous. Vaux and his assistant Jacob Mould used brick, marble, granite, rock, and cast iron (Mould's specialty) to create totally different structures at each site. The bridges are hidden until you suddenly stumble onto or under one and then their unique designs are a pleasure to see. Greywacke, pictured adjacent, is unique in that it is the only bridge named after the material used in its construction - a type of sandstone found in the Hudson River Valley. All the bridges and arches have names of course Image 2 - note how a busy roadway is totally hidden from the park. Image 5 - this wider arch directs a bridle path beneath a pedestrian walkway. West Central Park and its Reflection on the Lake by opalzebra3, 2 more photos I am not from New York City but I have visited the place 5 times during the last 20 years. I first visited the place in 1982 when it was dirty and outright dangerous, earning the monicker "The Bad Apple" from either Time or Newsweek magazine. But with the election of Mayor Rudy Giuliani, New York City has been cleaned-up and underwent a transformation. Central Park was notorious for muggings in the pre-Giuliani days so we stayed away from the place in the 1980's. Then over time, we would visit the southeast end of Central Park, mainly the area near Wollman Rink where you can see the Plaze Hotel, made famous by Home Alone 2 and other similar films. During a recent trip in November 2008, we decided to explore West Central park starting at the Museum of Natural History at 79th St. and West Central Park Ave.. We entered the park at around 74th St. to go to the Bethesda Terrace area, home of the Angel of the Waters sculpture, the Bow Bridge, the Loeb Boathouse and Sheep Meadow. It was raining when we were there but the weather cleared enough for us to take great photos of the Lake from Bow Bridge, the Bow Bridge from the gazebo on the north end and the Loeb Boathouse. Some other points of interest would be the Dakota Mansion along West Central Park Ave. where Beatle John Lennon was shot dead and Strawberry Fields that was named in his honor. If you are a Ghostbusters fan, you will also pass by 55 West Central Park which was the home of Dana (Sigourney Weaver) and the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church beside it. Inside the park, you will also see Tavern on the Green where Peter and Dana had their date. Central Park is 843 acres with a 6-mile perimeter spanning 59th and 110th St. and 5th Ave. and West Central Park Ave.. We plan to visit the north side (Great Lawn and Reservoir areas) on our next visit. The place is so huge and with many features that it will take a while to really see the entire place. Address: north of 59th St.Directions: 1 Train or Bus 10 on the west side and Bus 1, 2, 3 on the east side.Website: http://www.centralpark.org/

The Central Park entrance at the 59th Street end of the Avenue of the Americas is called Artist's Gate, one of four on the south border. In 1933, mayor Fiorello LaGuardia renamed 6th Avenue to foster cooperation and unity among the nations of the western hemisphere and brought together at this gate famous statues of 3 American heroes. Most famous is the statue of Jose Marti at the moment of a fatal wound in battle. His right arm is held against his right chest wound as he pulls on the reins and the horse rears. Jose de San Martin and Simon Bolivar are featured on the other two statues. Leave a Comment

The Alice in Wonderland sculpture dedicated by philanthropist and publisher George Delacorte in honor of his late wife is stated to be the most popular children's statue in Central Park. Children clamber all over this statue as photographers patiently wait for a few seconds without climbers to snap pictures. Located on the north side of Conservatory Water, it was dedicated in 1959 and depicts Alice seated on a giant mushroom surrounded by characters from Lewis Carroll's 1862 Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Around Alice are the Mad Hatter, the dormouse, the White Rabbit, the Cheshire cat, and on Alice's lap Dinah the kitten. The 11 foot statue is the work of Spanish sculptor Jose de Creeft and Alice is said to be modelled after his daughter. It was cast by a local Long Island City company. The designers inserted short segments of prose from the book in the terrace around the sculpture. Leave a Comment

This is not a park. This is THE park. I already knew about from so many movies but I was really impressed by its size. It’s completely man-made even the hills!... The locals like to go there for jogging, cycling, skating, pic nic etc. Some meadows and lakes were always crowded. I enjoyed walking inside the park for hours in small path and I passed by enormous space of trees, wide open spaces, beautiful small bridges, a baseball pitch(!), small cafes, a carousel, an outdoor theater, some nice statues and memorials, children playgrounds etc The best moment was at the central pretty lake located just over 71st street where we rent a boat and we had our relaxing moments for 90’. We also passed under the famous Bow Bridge one of the most romantic spots in NY (Hollywood had brought NY closer many years before…). You can buy tickets at Loeb Boathouse for $12+ $20deposit. The Boathouse restaurant was ideal for dinner after the boat ride and it’s location is great just there overlooking the lake but it was full of people and I didn't know that I had to make a reservation. I think everyone can find a good spot in this park even he wants an isolated area (something difficult in Manhattan in general). You can also rent a bicycle or ride a horse drawn cart for a romantic ride around the park. Address: 59th Street to 110th StreetDirections: It’s located in the middle of the city, in the heart of Manhattan. Get out at Columbus Circle subway and use the south entrance of the park.Website: http://www.centralpark.org/

Wollman Rink by bugalugs Besides being used as an ice rink in the winter, in the summer months from May-September it is transformed into a Victorian Garden with amusements and rides. Admission is $15 per person Children under 3 feet - free with paying person We visited at the beginning of september and it looked rather deserted, but then again it was an awful day and hardly stopped raining. by Dazzle88 If you wanna just lay around and tan in Sheep Meadow or ride the colorful merry-go-round or just rollerskate around Central Park is the place for you! There are also a couple of lakes-you can either rent a row boat or rent a mini sailboat and electronicly sail it around. In the summer there are face painters and portrait painters along the entrence to the "oh so famous" zoo! (where peguins and polar bears live) Leave a Comment
