The 36 acre Ramble is the most wild and untamed appearing feature of Central Park, yet other than the rocky outcroppings it is totally artificial and planned, one of the most remarkable creations of the original planners. The unplanned and seemingly untouched wild area is totally designed. Even the small creek, the Gill, which runs down to the Lake is artificial with water flow controlled by a faucet. New York City lies along a major bird migratory path and more than 270 species of birds have been seen in the Ramble, along with raccoons and other small wildlife. It has been rated one of the 15 best birdwatching sites in the United States and draws large numbers of birdwatchers identified by their binoculars travelling both singly and in groups. The Bow Bridge is a very popular gathering place for birdwatchers. For instance, up to 20 species of warblers have been seen here. Many types of specimen trees and shrubs contribute the untamed appearance of this site. Leave a Comment

This smooth 15 acre lawn was constructed from a rocky and swampy terrain by blasting out rock and covering the surface with several feet of dirt - it became the most expensive construction site at Central Park. Originally a military parade ground, it got the name from sheep kept on the site from 1864 to 1934. In the 1960's, the lawn was ruined as the meadow was used for huge concerts, VietNam protests, hippie festivals, as well as the moon landing by American astronauts. It was the first area restored by the Conservancy and reopened in 2001, again the pastoral lawn as planned by the original designers. Today up to 30000 visitors jam the field each weekend. Picnics, parties, sunbathing, sports - the Sheep Meadow is one of the most popular sites in Central Park. Leave a Comment

by hundertmorgen The Dakota stands directly opposite to the Womens' Gate entrance to Strawberry Fields on West 72nd Street and Central Park West. This is the route so familiar to John and Yoko in their frequent journeys into Central Park. Built in 1880 by the architect who designed the Plaza Hotel a building with similar features it was New York's first luxury apartment building. Oddly enough for all its original prestige it was surrounded by slums yet its 65 luxurious apartments with its many celebrity owners were situated directly opposite the newly created Central Park some with spectacular views of the fields so cherished by John and Yoko and the Lake beyond. Some of its inhabitants have included Judy Garland, Leonard Bernstein, Lauren Bacall and Boris Karloff. Yoko Ono still maintains a residence at the Dakota. Leave a Comment

Lining the west margin of Central Park is NYC"s most famous residential architecture. It is the site of the Museum of Natural History ( designed by Vaux and Mould) as well as the New York Historical Society. The Dakota, at W 72nd Street, is perhaps the most famous as the home of John Lennon and Yoko Ono as well as many other celebrities and as the site of the movie Rosemary's Baby. But it is not the most striking, an accolade given the towered buildings. The San Remo is considered the most beautiful with its 10 story towers on a 17 story base. The towers are capped by Roman Style temple structures with Corinthian columns. The Beresford, also imaged, is distinguished by three towers and two major facades, one facing the park and the other the Museum of Natural History. These three are the most famous, although other towered residences include the Century and Majestic. Leave a Comment

My boyfriend and I like variety in out life. After dinner and/or drinks we'll get out and try something we don't usually do often, namely ice skating. Ice skating is lot of fun (but not when you fall on your butt, ouch)!! The Wollman Rink at Central Park is a fun place to go ice skating. Their hours and prices are reasonable. If you are a bit challenged with skating, they have a skating school. You can also have an event or party at the rink. Spending a few hours skating in the beautiful park like setting is very romantic. Leave a Comment

I love Central Park NYC by beaniezotzim Whether this is your first visit to NYC or your 100th visit to NYC... don't miss Central Park... it is the coolest park I have ever seen in my life. I loved it so much that I went to the park at least two times on both of my visits (which only lasted a couple of days) There are so many trails here that you could get lost in the park. I could go on and on and on about this wonderful place, but really, you need to discover this place all on your own... ENJOY. ( Ah, I miss it just thinking about it) Leave a Comment

Central Park, New York by J.I.M Central Park has several lakes, where you can hire boats to row in. Also, in the photo, you'll notice the buildings just near to the park - many of those are expensive apartments owned by extremely rich people like Madonna! Leave a Comment

by hundertmorgen One of the great pleasures New Yorkers and tourists enjoy is getting away from it all in Central Park. Stretching 51 blocks between 59th and 110th streets, this 843 acre, green rectangle has served its city well since 1859. ...rent a rowboat and explore this 22 acre lake lined with weeping willows and Japanese cherry trees. The Diary - Central Park Visitor Center by I-Believe-I-Can-Fly The Central Park Visitor Center is housed in the Dairy, a 19th century Swiss chalet with Gothic touches. The visitor center, open from 10 am to 5 pm Tuesday through Sunday, features a permanent exhibit about the history of Central Park, and a gift shop. You can pick up the summerstage concerts program from here. From the Dairy loggia, visitors can see the Wollman Rink and the New York City skyline. Leave a Comment

Called the crown jewel of Central Park, The Angel of the Waters was sculpted in 1868 by Emma Stebbins, the first woman to receive a sculpture commission from the City of New York. It lies at the north end of the lower level of the Bethesda terrace. The bronze 8 foot statue features a winged angel carrying a lily, the symbol of purity, commemorating the opening of the Croton Resevoir bringing fresh water to NYC. Her other hand reaches down to bless the water. Four figures at the base represent temperance, purity, health, and peace. The basis for the figure is drawn from the Gospel of Saint John in which an angel grants healing powers to the Bethesda fountain in Jerusalem. The base was designed by Vaux with detail work by Mould. The statue was placed in 1873. As one of the iconic features of the park, the statue has appeared in many movies including Godspell, Angels in America, Ransom, and others. It was the starting point for the first Amazing Race as well. Leave a Comment
