The triangle made by Fifth Avenue, Broadway and 23rd St is the site of one of New York's most famous early skyscrapers : the Flatiron Building (originally named the Fuller building, after the construction company that owned it).
Some more facts about the Flatiron building :
The "angels" you see on top of the building are not the originals but reproductions from photographs - the originals are lost. The recently installed ones are said to look more adult.
There are two very common misconceptions about this popular building :
-that it was the first NYC building to use an iron cast
-that it was briefly the tallest buildig in the world.
Facts :
-The first steel-frame building in NYC was the Tower Building, built in 1888 by Bradford Lee Gilbert at 50 Broadway. It was, however, demolished later.
-At the time the Flatiron Building was completed in 1902, the Park Row building was taller.

One of Murray Hill's top highlights, the Flatiron Building was originally called the Fuller Building when it was completed in 1902. But hey, that name just doesn't cut it!
The steel beam construction enabled the architect to support the building's unique and revolutionary design.

This building is in almost every movie that is recorded in New York. We knew the building from the movies and had no idea or intentions to look for it. But we did bump into it while walking through New York City.
The building was even smaller in than i thought (only 6 feet at the start).
They say it's the oldest remaining skyscraper in New York and is about 285 feet (87 meters) tall.
It is in use as a commercial office building.

On the corner of Broadway and 5th is the recognisable Flatiron building, built in 1902 and once the World's tallest building according to one book (taller than the Eiffel Tower? Really? Hmmm). Still, in 1905 Steichen took a famous photograph of it that adorns bland modern offices to this day.

The Flatiron building is the oldest and one of the most distinguishable skyscrapers in New York City. It was designed by Daniel Burnham and built in 1902. It was built in a Chicago Early Modern style and is supported by it's strong steel frame. It is 285 feet (87 meters) tall.
You need to walk around the building to get the best understanding of why it has it's name. From one angle the building has depth and from another it looks incredibly flat. Very interesting architecture.

Flatiron Building:
This triangular shaped building catches your eye on 5th Ave between 22nd & 23rd Sts as it blends traditionalism and modernism.
Before the "dot-com" crash a few years ago, this area used to be known for several years as the northern part of "Silicon Alley" due to the numerous internet-based start-ups in the area.
Northeast from here is Madison Square Park where in 2002 there was a reality show called "Dog Days" based on certain dogs and their owners who frequent a dog run in the park. The show was played on the Animal Planet channel, and was sort of a cross between "Friends" and the "Real World". Maybe you can still see those who got their 15 minutes of fame on TV - be on the lookout for a dog named Cherry and her cute red-headed owner Danielle.

Made famous by many movies, including the recent Spiderman movie, the Flat Iron Building lies right next to Madison Square. This is a truly unique building and one of my favorite in the city. Check out the picture to see what I mean :). It still puzzles me how they came up with such a tight corner building.

The Flatiron Building - I have seen this building on films and the TV and also on Martin_S's New York page, so I thought I would have one as well :)!!
It was built in 1892 when this district was a very popular retail and entertainment area.

The Flatiron Building is named for its distinctive triangular shape, which was determined by the unusually shaped plot of land on which it was built. This early skyscraper has been immortalized in countless photographs. The surrounding neighborhood came back into fashion 20 years ago and today boasts chic boutiques, restaurants and cafes.

Flatiron Bulding
The obvious way to maximize the potential of a triangular plot of land was to raise a triangular building on it, and with the Flatiron Building architect Daniel Burnham did exactly that. Completed in 1902, the 285-foot-high structure became the world's tallest building and was among the first in New York to use a stell frame construction. This was crucial element in the evolution of skyscraper pioneered by Burnham 20 years earlier in Chicago.
