NY Public Library by mht_in_la This is New York Public Library. Besides books it also has great architecture and free internet. I remember about 10 years ago I came here in new year's eve to watch the big apple drop at Time Square. It was so crowded and we were almost crushed by the mounted police. So we retreated to this area. I climbed up the lion's statue, as seen in photo, and got a great view. Leave a Comment Phone: (212) 930-0830Directions: Take 1,2,3,9 to 42nd Street and Broadway. detailed closeup entrance area of the library by butterflykizzez04 This is a closeup shot of the entrance to the New York Public Libary. I am very interested in the architecture and the detail put into the making of this lovely library. When you go, take a minute to really notice all the craftmanship that was utilized to make and construct this masterpiece. The building is a major piece of artwork also. New York Public Library by butterflykizzez04 This is a lovely building. Located near our hotel also, just a short walk downtown. It definitely reminds me of the movie "GHOSTBUSTERS"..did you see that one? This building is considered one of the finest examples of Beaux-Arts-Style architecture in America. The library was a result of the merger between the ASTOR and LeNOX libraries. The library opened May 24, 1911. The two lions were originially named Lady Astor and Lord Lenox but later renamed Patience and Fortitude by Mayor La Guardia. The library is free to tour but please be quiet, people are studying...lol Leave a Comment Phone: (212) 930-0830Directions: Take 1,2,3,9 to 42nd Street and Broadway. One of the Lions in front of the Library by sarahandgareth This is the flagship of the New York public library system, with one of the best collections of books in the world, as well as one of the most beautiful reading rooms, designed to accommodate 500 people, and decorated with gorgeous Tiffany lamps. It’s free to enter, and you can just pick a book off the shelves and read for as long as you want; it’s a great place to hang out on a rainy day. If you’re spending a couple of months or more in New York, you should certainly go to your local branch and get yourself a library card, so that you can have access to the system’s vast lending resources (the main library building does not lend out its books, but across Fifth Avenue, there is a lending branch). The steps outside, guarded by two lions, are a useful meeting point, and at lunchtime you’ll find many an office-worker, or a library user, taking a break on the steps with a sandwich or a drink. NY Public Library by martin_nl This is the main branch of the New York Public Library. It is housed in a beautiful building. When it was opened in 1911 it ranked as the biggest marble structure ever built in the United States. On the 3rd floor is a massive reading room, designed for about 500 patrons. So if it's a bit wet and windy outside, grab a book and head head up to the third floor to read the book and admire all of the art inside. New York Public Library by djramey Visit the enormous and expansive New York Public Library. There might not be a better place in all of New York to people watch than on these steps. The NYPL is home to millions upon millions of books, some which can not be found elsewhere, and the people that visit this historic building are sure to not disappoint either. Right downtown, on 5th and 42nd, the Library is as easy to get to as it is noticeable. Visit and you will not be upset about your trek there.
