Statue of Liberty seen from Battery Park by martin_nl, 1 more photos If you want to queue up for an hour or two, before you have the possibility to board the ferry to Liberty and Ellis Island you can get to the Statue of Liberty. Personally I don't like to queue up for two hours so I had a view of the Statue from Battery Park. Another alternative id to take the Staten Island ferry. Beside a shorter waiting time, the Staten Island ferry is free, whereas the Liberty Island ferry will cost around $10.00. Statue of Liberty has to be the best known landmark of New York. To many immigrants that used to arrive by boat to America this was the first site they saw. The Statue was a gift by the French. Two frenchman started making a statue in 1865 and decided it should be a gift to America. It took more than 20 years to complete the whole statue and by 1886, on October 28th to be precise the statue was unveiled to the public. In the '80's it was restored. After the 9/11 NYC attacks, the statue remained closed for almost two years. Now it's open again, but it is still not allowed to enter the statue itself. The ticket to the ferry also included a trip to Ellis Island which used to be an immigration station from 1892-1954. More than 12 million people crossed this island before being allowed to enter the US. Leave a Comment Directions: South Ferry at Battery Park - Take the #5 train to Bowling Green or #1 to South Ferry

The facility went into bad disrepair over the years and in 1984, President Reagan got Lee Iococa to lead a crusade to renovate the Liberty Statue site. It cost over $100 milllion in donations. and in 1986 it was ready for tours. The statue originally was a gift from France. It was shipped in 1885 in 350 pieces in 214 crates. Completed assembly in 1876 for 100 year America anniversary. Since then the statue has had 30 million visitors come through. You can no longer go up to the top, and even only allwoed at the first promonade level for security reasons.

1. Before joining the queue into the monument itself you have to put bags in a locker which cost 1 dollar for up to 2 hours and charge more if you return later 2. Cafes are limited and mostly outdoor so if it is too cold get something to eat at Ellis Island 3. The tour takes up to one hour. If you are brave enough, enter as late as you can as the queue through security was none existent after 2:30pm. You would still have plenty of time to look around as long as you know the time of the last ferry. 4. Get some great pics of the Statue from the grounds Leave a Comment Directions: South Ferry at Battery Park - Take the #5 train to Bowling Green or #1 to South Ferry

When I came to put this tip up I did a VT search to see if either Liberty or Ellis Island had a separate listing here and found that yes they did, both under New Jersey. Checking a few other sites I discovered that there seems to be quite a controversy regarding the administrative ownership of the Islands. By all accounts in 1998 the US Supreme Court after several years of legal battle ruled that the landfill part of Ellis Island did in fact belong to New Jersey, whilst the original part of the Island was part of New York. Thus Ellis Island has a foot in both camps. As to Liberty Island this seems definitely to be part of New York though visiting www.aboutnewjersey.com this site claims Liberty Island as part of Jersey City. And here was me, all I wanted to do was put a tip or two up!! Whether this is of interest or not to anyone else I don't know but it did give me an entertaining couple of hours researching. The definitive answer seems to be from a New York Times article on 31st May 1998 - see: www.endex.com/gf/buildings/liberty/eiowner.htm That said, the trip to Ellis and Liberty is definitely a major "MUST-DO" Leave a Comment Address: NJ or NY - take your pick.Directions: South Ferry at Battery Park - Take the #5 train to Bowling Green or #1 to South Ferry from NY or Ferry from Liberty State Park NJ.Website: www.nps.gov/stli

main building, Ellis Island by mrclay2000 The mass emigration from Europe to America between 1845 and 1920 is well-known around the world. Concentrated within the years 1880-1892, millions of immigrants who often knew not one word of English passed through the Ellis Island indoctrination checkpoints on their "way to America." At present the main building is the only one open to the public though a few dozen exist on the island. Architecturally this building (which is now a museum exhibiting the mass migrations) is a fantastic ornament shared between New York and New Jersey. The main highlight of our New York visit is to see the Statue of Liberty, people around the world have been dreaming to see this famous monument. As we know that she is a Lady Liberty was a friendship gift from France over 100 years ago, Stands 151 foot, color green, holding a book and torch (my youngest thought she hold an ice cream). It is designed of sculpture Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, designed as a World Heritage Site and a symbol of freedom. Seeing Lady Liberty is kind of worth visit there is a feeling that you’ll never explain especially when you came from far far away. Some people would love to see her and others who’ve been living in New York for 15 years still stranger if what she looked like in person, a thought of no interest about her. Visitors who came to see her are mostly from Europe and from other states of US, few are from Asian country. Visitors can stroll the 11-point star-shaped Fort Wood and take an elevator to the obserbatory, but be sure that you have a long patient for the long waiting time access. STATUE OF LIBERTY by RACCOON1 A MUST SEE . Budget one hour . The ferries leave every 20 minutes . You will get better pictures from the ferry . You are a bit too close on the island unless you have a wide angle lens . You can walk around the island and just catch the next ferry. Ditto for Ellis island . Visit the Ellis Island web site if you want to trace your ancestry . They have a nice site . Liberty Enlightening the World by seagoingJLW A visit to Liberty Enlightening the World begins at Battery Park, where Castle Clinton, built in 1811, serves as the ticket and information center. While you wait in line to board the boat to the island there are acrobats to entertain you. The ferries run every 30 to 45 minutes. The statue, by Frederic-Auguste Batholdi, has stood here since 1886. You can climb up to the top. There is a museum as well. The statue was made a Narional Monument on October 15, 1924. It became a World Heritage Site in 1984. Leave a Comment
