Going out of business: Going out of business...NOT!
  • Tip Rating:
  • You'll see countless electronics stores, particularly in well-touristed midtown areas. We know these as "going out of business" stores because they lure customers in with those fake signs. They'll offer cash discounts too fantastic to believe. Take my word, DON'T BELIEVE THEM. The "list" prices on the stickers are phony, and you're likely to buy discountinued merchandise.

Buyer beware! Before you buy anything, check the internet, the manufacturer's web site (to see if the merchandise is legit) and the Better Business Bureau or Consumer Affairs. Or just spend your money at a reputable dealer. B&H is a highly regarded photo shop, J&R and Comp USA are two reputable computer dealers. Just ask around, and always pay by credit card for your own protection.

Going out of business: Not exactly going out of business
  • Tip Rating:
  • When you are in areas where stores have Going out of business signs they arent really going anywhere. The name might change on the DBA cert they hold or something but they have been in the GOB state for years and years. Avoid them.

Going out of business: So they SAY they're going out of business...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Little shoe stores or jewelry and accessory shops that say "GOING OUT OF BUSINESS" or "CLEARANCE SALES"...BEWARE. Most of the time they are NOT going out of business or having a clearance sale because they're moving locations. I know this because several of the stores that once said that are still standing there years later. They are just trying to get you to come into the shop and see their merchandise, which they have price tagged with handwritten tags to make ti seem cheaper than merchandise that has been price gunned with more official looking tags. Try to be aware of the price, don't let the store's cheap atmosphere or handwritten tags fool you into thinking it's actually a bargain. Most of the time their merchandise is more expensive that the store next door that is NOT advertising a clearance sale.

If you feel you must go into a Going Out of Business store, be aware of the prices, don't let the store clerks force you to try anything on, because once you have it on, it'll make their sale easier for them and don't part with your money to readily.

Try boutiques and haggle prices or chain stores where such deception is not allowed. Learn how to haggle. It's a fun game!

Never go to this place it is highway robbery - They can sell you a package of electronic products with "Apple unlock material" in for 3 times the regular price

Going out of business: Moe Ginsburg is truelly out of business
THIS IS NOT A "TRAP" BUT IT'S A BIG MISTAKE DUE TO BAD INFO..... Moe Ginsburg, the famous men's clothing store, is out of business, for real. The security guard at the building said that it's been out of business for about 2 years, which translates into about early-mid 2005. He said people still come here thinking it's still in business, mostly due to the internet. Not just native New Yorkers get fooled but people from all over the world as well. In fact, the day I got there, March 6, 2007, he said about 10 people before me that day thought Moe G. was there and most of them got that info thanks to our friends at Google. By the way, about only 4 of the 10 were from NYC. The rest were from various nations of Europe. So MG is a big attraction for tourists/foriegners as well.

Moe Ginsburg is truelly out business. Nothing to see here.

Men's Warehouse at 20-1 St. & 6 Ave. (or as tourists know it as Ave. of the Americas) but the prices are not as competitve as the original Moe Ginsburg on most items, unfortunately. But go there anyway. You never know, you might get lucky.

Going out of business: Closing Down
There is a shop under the Empire State building that claims to be moving and everything is half the ticket price. Of course the ticket price is over double the price you will get in Macey's or similar. Also you will end up paying tax on your purchase where as if you have your passport in Macey's you wont.

Going out of business: On/Off Digital 5th Avenue AVOID !!!
This shop claims with "shop inventarisation 30% price-off" and therefore huge discounts to easy-victim tourists like myself: I left with a Canon Rebel camera with Sigma zoom lens for appr. 1700 bucks. Very soon, I found out that this set costs less than the half in any normal camera shop. Furthermore, they are frauding by impressing the buyer with wrong fact. In my case for example: Sigma lenses are made by Carl Zeiss of Germany (!) and that the shop sold very very special memorycards, which costs more than a 100 USD... Even I, and I am normally a very sceptical buyer, fells for this charming Italian sales talk !

Don't visit any small place which seems to have "cheap" buys.

Go to a real A/V store like B&H at 420 9th Avenue, or J&R Camera World at 34 Park Row

Going out of business: Not all the stores refund your money!!!
When you come to New York in most of the places you will hear that if you buy something and then for some reason don't want it, you can return it and get the money back. Well, it didn't work in my case. Besides, instead of taking care of the customer, once you have paid the salesmen treat you awfully- they yell at you, they insult you- I would never think that this is the level of service I will get in USA.

Be careful to ask specifically if the store refund your money or give the credit store. Usually the little stores in Broadway area never refund the money. Never go to the place I went "Video Camera City" on 1271 Broadway, New York, NY

Go to the big stores (like Macy's, Best Buy, Walmart...) You might pay a little bit more but it worths it.
