Tickets, New York City
The discount TKTS booth in New York is not like London, the lines can be VERY long and not very efficient. I did get tickets there but it was a Sunday night when most of the theaters are not open so the line wasn't too bad but I still waited for about 1/2 hour. And unlike London or Chicago, the TKTS booth does not accept credit cards, only cash or traveler's checks.
Fun Alternatives: There are several websites that offer discount codes so that you can purchase in advance
You're in NYC and now you want to go the biggest event at the Garden aka Madison Square Garden and you see scalpers all around. Some of them charge you three times the price of the tickets and they are real and some are not. No big surprise there.
Be careful if you decde to go ahead with purchasing tickets that way..the scalpers can show you a real ticket and then switch it with a fake. You should check the date of the event and make sure it matches with a real ticket. You have to act and think fast when you are purchasing tickets in this way.
Of course, you're not supposed to buy these scalped tickets and I don't condone that sort of thing. Umm, not that I've ever done that before..
Unique Suggestions: You can head early to an event, say as soon as the box office opens and see if there are any tickets left, even single seats. Some times tickets will be released same day as the concert.
Fun Alternatives: Also, look for regular fans selling unwanted tickets they can't use. Don't forget to check the tickets very carefully though you never know!
Originally, I reserved this space to give you a valuable tip on getting cheap tickets at the TKTS desk in the World Trade Centre. Ofcourse, this has now all changed, but the one on Times Square still exists. You'll have to queue up for this one, though.
