For those weekend trips to Long Island, there is nothing like the Long Island Rail Road service. Check them out at the Metropolitan Transport Authority's Long Island Rail Road information webpage at http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/lirr/.

Getting to NYC is easy -- you...
Getting to NYC is easy -- you can fly into any of the three major airports there: JFK, La Guardia or Newark. Then you can take a cab or the train into the city.
If you're in Manhattan, you can walk, walk, walk everywhere. For greater distances, like getting from midtown to uptown, take a cab. You can go about 80 blocks in 10 min for about $7.

    Transportation Tips
Grand Central Station (GCT) / Penn Station (Penn) /NJ Transit / Subways / Taxi Cabs

This tip is meant for travelers who want a guide on what time its safe to travel in/around NYC transportation. I would say as a general rule its totally fine to take any means of transportation (mentioned above) safely until about 12:00am. Then it gets a bit dicey and you need to be very aware of what is going on. Don't fall asleep!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would not be nervous at all on the Metro Trains up till that time, meaning GCT or Penn. Anyone taking in a Broadway show is just going home between 11pm and 12am so its always full of families and tourists scurrying back home or to their place of stay. Anyone who went into NYC for dinner is probably getting on the trains at this time as well.

I'm not that comfortable on NJ Transit, so I would say its probably okay to travel on the bus lines until 10pm and 11pm.

Subways are usally full with all types of people until around pretty late..probably 11pm and 12am. They run all night long but the bums are often out roaming around and the drunks are out too.

Taxi Cabs are okay for short destinations in NYC anytime, never heard of any problems except for bad driving!

Of course if you are traveling with a group, it would be okay to travel later than what I listed, this guide is more for maybe two or three people and women especially (traveling alone).

I would use this guide for anyday during the week. On the weekends you may find the trains more packed, but the same guidelines should apply.

Grand Central Terminal: Grand Central Terminal and the Metro North

Grand Central Station is beautiful. Its nice to see its classical style preserved, unlike Penn Station.

The Metro North runs to Grand Central Station from the suburbs north of New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey. There are also a number of subway lines that are avaiable from the station.

The immense size of Grand Central also means that it is home to numerous shops that sell everything from donuts to coffee to printer cartridges.

Grand Central is a good place to start a trip to the Catskill Valley or to Connecticut. Make sure to check timetables, there are employees of the Metro North who are willing to help all over the main area of the station.

There is some talk of moving the LIRR to Grand Central in a few years, but I dont know if this is really going to happen.

Grand Central Station isn't just a train station. It is an architectural masterpiece. You can catch the Metro North to parts of Upstate New York and Connecticut( Harlem, Hudson, New Haven line) . Also you can catch the subways as well (4,5,6,7).

Please show up at the station with enough time to buy your tickets and get on the train. The trains do leave on time.

    I recommend flying into either...
I recommend flying into either airport, however, be aware that departing from LaGuardia can create a delay on your schedule. Always be prepared for anything.
I don't recommend taking a train from Penn Station around 10pm at night during the week. The 'Asian' corporate bankers are commuting at that time and it is murder to squeeze yourself through thousands of other travelers.

New York is the avaiation hub...
New York is the avaiation hub in the United States as well as the gateway to and from Europe. The city has 3 airports - John F. Kennedy, Newark and La Guadia. Most international airlines land at JFK.
There's a subway link from JFK but this involves waiting for a shuttle bus to Howard Beach and then more than an hour's ride to Manhattan. So I recommend to take yellow cab directly from JFK, costs less than US$25. The cab in New York is not as expensive as in London.
Subway is maligned, but actually clean, efficient, heated, air-conditioned but not quite safe in some stations during the night time. Entry to the station (or trains) is with a token costing $1.50 each, depends on how many far you are going. Buses are fine but not the best way to travel within the NYC, unless if your feet hurt from walking ground. The pictures shows the busy street in Madison Avenue.

    Penn Station
Pennsylvania Station, more commondly known as Penn Station, is one of New York City's main railway stations, sharing the Pennsylvania Station name with several stations in other cities.

The station is located on 32nd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues, and as one of the busiest stations in the world it's used by millions to get across North America. The station also has an several subway lines that run through it, listed below:

    Subway stations at Penn Station:

Subway lines accessible from the Herald Square station, a block to the east:

    Subway: Subway
Take subway is the most convinience way to get NYC and other parts of NY's neighborhoods, though i felt unsafe cos its so crowded but if you are in hurry its save time.

We took subway manytimes from Queens to NYC and to getting around in Manhattan, but we make sure that we have a sub way map to guide where we'll stop and as well as its very important that you should know what train you'll take, from train E, F, V, N.....

MTA card is your passport to take subway you can buy it in stores, stations by cash and through credit card. Fare of a subway and local bus is 2$ children with 44 inches tall are free. You can purchase unlimitted rides for one day and for one week use.

MTA card also can be used to ride MTA bus.
