Well I found a jackpot piece of information when I turned up something about 'ChinaTown Bus'. I had never heard of it before and not very many people seem to have written about it on VT, I found more info on the Lonely Planet forum regarding it. The Chinese as we all know make sure they get around the world one way or another and make as much money as possible! And yes..they made it here and ARE making a lot of money....

They have cleverly set up a bus company which rivals Grey Hound and Peter Pan on certain routes..I just wish it could be on a larger range of destinations as the coaches in the States are SO expensive..I had no idea! In England the National Express do GREAT deals for getting around the country and I just presumed that Grey Hound was similar to that..but no no no...its sometimes cheaper to FLY than take their buses. So going back to my point...sorry I digress....go online to www.chinatownbus.com and www.ivymedia.com and you'll find wonderful deals. To Boston, Philadelphia, Washington DC and somewhere else I forget right now, it is just $15-$20 one way! Now compare that to $70+ that you'll find with the other bus companies!

Head to China Town and catch the bus...its very very easy...you can also book online. There is a tiny tiny office there with just a window and a man behind issuing tickets.

    Pedestrian tips
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the great mysteries is, if so few New Yorkers have cars, how come there's so much traffic?

It can be intimidating for a first-time visitor to cross streets like a native. Just keep in mind that we've got years of practice. The natives are easy to spot... we're the ones who stand three lanes into traffic before the light changes.

Warning to newcomers -- I'm sure you're from some gentle place where pedestrians have the right of way, and cars actually stop for them. That's not New York. You've got to stay alert, and remember that lots of people here only consider a traffic light to be a "suggestion." Look both ways, even on a one-way street, or you're likely to be plowed down by a racing bicycle messenger.

You'll be relieved to hear that you've still got plenty of time after the Don't Walk sign starts flashing.

Subway: Pick up a day card!
  • Tip Rating:
  • The metrocard day pass is the most effective way of getting around the city. There were days when we felt that maybe we needn't have bought it and buying individual ones at $2 each would have been better, but other days when we really were going all over the city, the metrocard day pass was worth it. I believe it was $7. The is only one hitch though and it seemed to happen to me everytime! IF when you swipe it, it doesnt work, you cant swipe it straightaway again. You must WAIT 18 minutes......yes you read that correctly EIGHTEEN minutes before you're allowed to try again. When I told the woman on duty she said "look miss, Im not going to argue with you...you'll just have to wait!" I couldnt believe it...she could SEE that it hadnt worked...their worry however is that you're letting other people use your card. I found it to be a little silly. What if it DID work, but you realised that you got out at the wrong station...you cant get back in again for another 18 minutes, or as she told me "buy a single ticket"...as IF!!!! Im not spending MORE money for something which isnt even my fault!!!! Arrgghh...very frustrating!

But apart from that..if you dont get a faulty card or machine...its the best way to travel!!!

The subway system in New York is an excellent way to get around -- if it's running properly! Be forwarned that on a daily basis, routes change or are shut down, so this can throw a monkey wrench into your plans. There are either notices hung up at the station platform, or sometimes there are PA announcements (albeit most times extremely muffled and unclear) Some subway drivers are good about announcing at each stop any change in route. If you have internet access on your trip, it would be good to check the website below before you head out.

It's also not the easiest subway system I've had to use. What I found confusing was at some stations there were multiple entrances, and if you enter at the wrong side, you could be going in the wrong direction. Sometimes you will then have to repay to enter on the correct side, though it depends on the mood of the attendant if they believe you or not, whether they let you in gratis. An unlimited or pre-paid metro card is the way to go , as you don't have to worry about re-entry or getting a transfer.

Safety wise, it is a good idea to ask someone or your concierge about safer subway stations, especially if you're a female travelling alone, as I had the misfortune of taking the F train to Brooklyn and ended up in a sketchy neighborhood.

    Taxis: That Yellow Taxi Cab
  • Tip Rating:
  • Getting around NYC by taxi or cab as it is referred to is the easiest but not always the fastest way to get from point A to point B. Just stand by the curb with your arm stretched out and an available cab will stop.

    Subway: NYC Subway System
  • Tip Rating:
  • The best and most economical way to travel around NYC is by subway. NYC has the largest subway sysytem with 24 hr service 7 days a week. The system with its labyrinth of networked connections is quite easy to follow and navigate. Most New Yorkers commute every day to and from work on this vast system, so during the peak commuting times many of the lines that run local during off peak times are express during peak time.

Morning peak time is from 6 am - 10 am afternoon peak time is from 4 pm - 7 pm. During off peak and weekends there is usually many changes on the lines due to constuction work, so be on the lookout for signs posted throughout the subway and on their webiste.

Most commuters use the weekly or monthly METROCARD which can be purchased at any station with cash or credit card. The machines are self explanitory and depending on the station provided instuctions in various languages. If you are in NYC or only a day purchase the ALL DAY Pass for $7.

For further information about the subway system and mapping your route, check out their website. Make sure to grab a free map from the station clerk.

Sometimes you can get into a cab with a crazy cabbi. Not always, some are very nice and willing to engage you in conversation and will offer travel information. But sometimes,
you get a kook, that is absolutely nuts, and drives like a bat a hell. I have actually had to have two taxi drivers stop and let me out of their cab. I thought I would die if I let them drive me to my destination. I'm not sure why some taxi drivers are like this, but just be aware of it and ask them to pull over if you feel uncomfortable.

    Taxis: NYC Metro
  • Tip Rating:
  • NYC Metro - The NYC Subway rivals Boston and Chicago for "mass transit stories." There's always something happening there, but it is cheap, efficient, and if you know what you are doing (hey, even if you don't - we didn't) you can get around for $2.00 where a cab would cost $6-10.

you can purchase all day "unlimited rides" for $7.00, but if you don't know how many trips you'll be taking, it's probably better to get the "multi-ride" ticket. Anything over $10 and you get a 20% bonus. So, a $10.00 card for five rides actually gives you 6.
