We used this to connect from our LIRR (Long Island Railroad) train from Jamaica (and Kennedy Airport) with the Amtrak train to Washington DC.
Like many big urban stations, it’s a zoo combined with a labyrinth. Fine when you know it - slightly scary for outsiders. Take your time (make sure you allow yourself enough) and look for the Amtrak signs.
You have plenty shops on the concourse for food & drink of all kinds, plus book stores. They have a useful waiting area with seating near the tracks, and it has free wifi.
Tremendous for people watching!
If you arrive in New York by train from anywhere outside the commuter zone, or if you're planning a lengthy trip by train from New York, your journey will take you to Penn Station, right underneath Madison Square Garden. You can complain about the loss of the old Penn Station - a beautiful building to judge by the photos on display - but that won't change the reality of having to grapple with this crowded place. The queues here can be exceptionally long, and if you're leaving the city on a Friday evening and have limited time, we would advise you to seriously consider buying your ticket several days in advance, so you get a spot on the train you need. Patience is necessary throughout the station: the doors to specific platforms may remain closed until just before departure time, and the waiting crowds can get tetchy. Our advice: make sure you're neither hungry nor thirsty, and the time will pass a lot more quickly! The LIRR, or Long Island RailRoad, also departs from Penn Station, and is jam-packed with commuters at rush hour: try and plan your trip around this if possible.
