Subway: Subways and buses in and around NYC
The transit systems in and around NYC are excellent and inexpensive. The subway and bus system, specially as regards Manhattan, which most tourist never leave except to visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, both of which are actually in Jersey City, can be intimidating - but they really are not.

All subway station ticket booths have a supply of FREE maps. The maps cover both subways and buses because in NYC, they are integrated.

Years ago the subways were dirty, noisy and dangerous. But now they are only noisy. You probably will not notice it but there are plainclothes police (men and women) all around you. Once in a while you may encounter a pair of them at work, visible as they frisk and cuff someone. But even that is rare.

There's a tourist card that offers all-day unlimited use. Details are t ticket booths.

One area where they fail is the very limited number of stations that have handicap access, elevators or escalators. Also, signage in the stations are pitifully bad. They are inadequate in number and ridiculously misleading.

Yes use the bus to cross Manhattan.
Use the subway to go up and down New York.
But to see Manhattan you need to walk and I mean walk a lot.

I had my subway pass but the first thing I did after dropping my stuff at the hotel was to take a walk to and along the East River.

    I took this photo !

    Yes I was walking here.

    Subway: Ground, underground and sea...
I used subway intensively, I found it's a fast and efficient way to move from one point to another in this big city, appart from the cheapest (realistic) one. I also walked a lot, but for long distances (and in NYC, there are long distances!), you'd better get on wheels (iron, tires, skate...)
Traffic was not so bad, except at rush hours, at certain points (some bridges and tunnels, mainly), where you'd better get a bike... :-)

    Subway: MetroCards
$7 is all you need to move about this huge city. For 7 dollars you can buy a MetroCard Fun Pass. Its an unlimited us card that is avtive for 24 hours. Only catch is that you cant swipe it more than once in 20 min. That prevents people from passing it to their buddy.

    Subway: Subways
The New York subway is a very convenient and quick way to get around...not forgetting a little confusing to start with!! There are a serious lack of subway maps on the platforms and there needs to be more signs...I'll never moan about London's tubes again!! It's also not the greatest of places to be late at night...take a cab dont worry about the price! We brought a weekly travelcard which works out to be very good value for money if your using it alot...much better than single fares.
