If you think "it's this or that time of the year so I'll just pack accordingly" ... fuggedaboudit ! The New York City skies *will* play tricks on you because the weather is, more often than not, quite unpredictable. However, here are some "general weather conditions" : -temperature : spring and especially fall are generally considered the best periods to visit New York City. During June-August, the city can be hot and humid with temperatures in the 85 deg. Farenheit / 30 deg. Celcius range, during the winter months, although rarely below freezing, it can seem bitterly cold due to the wind. -rainfall : March and August are the months with the heaviest rainfall. Spring can be unpredictable. During the winter, sudden heavy snowfall can cause chaos in the city. -sunshine : the city enjoys long hours of sunshine during June-August, with a peak in July. Autumn has more sunshine than spring, although both are sunny. Winter days are usually clear and bright. HOWEVER : be prepared and expect the unexpected. Sudden showers or even thunderstorms are common in New York City. During the summer, take a sweater with you or the airconditioning-in-overdrive that seems to be on everywhere (especially in the subway) will have you freeze you butts off. Taking an umbrella with you is *never* a bad idea, either. Wunderground.com is in my opinion the best website to check the current weather conditions in New York City + a 5 day forecast. For what it's worth ;) Leave a Comment Website: http://english.wunderground.com/US/NY/New_York.html

If you don't have to drive in NYC, don't! If you do have to drive, you will encounter pedestrians with death wishes crossing in the middle of the road and at red lights with no regard to oncoming traffic, no one looks when changing lanes, awful rush hour traffic, kamikaze cab drivers, frequent lane blockages by cabs/delivery vans, workers. New York City is very easy to get around without a car, it's great to walk through Manhattan looking at all the cool architecture, do a little window shopping or pop into the local pizza joint for a slice. if the weather is not so nice or you have a longer way to go, NYC has good public transportation, either the subway or buses. | | | | Taxi Drivers going the Long Way 'Round | Tip Rating: | | | | |
When getting into a taxi cab, although usually they are quite safe, (I consider NYC taxi drivers some of the best, although many will supposedly disagree with me. I mean, they get you where you need to go and there are very rarely any taxi cab crashes!) please take the following precautions: Take down the cab driver's medallion number just in case you leave something the cab, you can have the vehicle tracked down. Or if the driver harasses you, you can report him. You can't do anything about the cab unless you know something about it. Read your rider's rights. You are fully entitled to everything listed there. When in the cab, pay attention to your belongings and where the cab is going. If the driver knows you are not from around here, they will take the long way around, i.e. taking local routes during rush hour or using the West side high way or the FDR (east side highway, I guess you would call it) at late nights when it would be cheaper taking the West Side or FDR during rush hour and local routes late nights. Try to familiarize yourself with the area, talk to local (you can try me, for instance!) about routes, and ask if you think you're going the long way around. Most of the time, the drivers are honest. They know when there are parades or street fairs, where the detours are, etc. However, use common sense and speak out if you think there's a problem. Leave a Comment Phone: 212 692 8294

 | | | | NYC isn't what it was...but still use your head. | Tip Rating: | | | | |
Being "city savvy" is still the rule of thumb here. New York City has become one of the SAFEST large cities in the world, but it's still home to 8 million people on a small island (and 8 million others who have easy access to it by bus, train, car and ferry), so basic statistics still say, not everyone you encounter will be your friend. Some basic tips, especially for the subway: -If you see an empty subway car, don't get in; if it's empty, there's a good reason it is. -Flash your Rolex, Movado or Tag Heuer all you want in the restaurant, but turn it around on the subway so the band is on top and the watch face is on the bottom of your wrist. -NEVER fall for the Metro Card swipe game- if you want a metro card for the subway, buy it in the machines or at the booth. -And last but not least, make sure you realize that some subway lines run express.
