Washington's headquarters in Newburgh
The Revolutionary War and early United States of America history for you VT history buffs is alive and well in Newburgh. You see Washington made his headquarters in Newburgh at the Hudson River side home of Jonathan Hasbrouck house. In fact this was the longest he spent in one place during the whole war of American independence. This is the very first tax payer supported historic site in the United States dating to 1850 when it was acquired by the state of New York to honor George Washington and the birthplace of the original purple heart award. The house is set up and furnished to look as it did at the time the General, Mrs. Washington, and their slaves lived in New Newburgh.

This huge sculpture garden about 300 hectors almost a square mile tucked in to the rolling hills of the Hudson valley really with the Schunnemunk Mountain Mountainville Conservancy as its backdrop. Very special Art in a very unique atmosphere. The light dancing on the sculptures and the interaction of clouds rain and sun really makes this place a sort of concert for the eyes of nature and art really interacting very nice. The name Storm King Art Center comes from the mountian with the same name Storm King on the Hudson Rver. It was a famus landmark
Storm King within its beautiful landscape has something like 130 huge sculpture by some of the best know artist of the 20th century.

Patrick and I have begun to ice skate every other weekend or so. We absolutely love it. Due to the extremely mild winter we've had in NY, we've resorted to using one of the local ice areanas. Our favorite is Ice Time Sports Complex here in Newburgh. The have several public skate times, but we usually go on a Saturday or a Sunday from 2:00-3:45. Hopefully we'll be hitting the rink this Friday evening (public skate is 7:15-9:00). Ice Time also hosts its own ice hockey league, figure skating club and even hosts special spectator events. There is a fee for all of the activities held at Ice Time. Public skate is $8 for adults and $5 for children 5-12. You can also rent skates for an additonal $3 per person. Patrick and I luckily own our own skates. If you plan on skating often you can purchase a skate card at a reduced rate, you save 10%. The ice rink has a concessions stand complete with hot and cold foods (cocoa, cappucino, coffee, soda, juice, water, nachos, pretzels, pizza, hot dogs, chips etc.). There is also a game room for those of you that don't like or know how to skate.

Downing had advocated for the creation of Central Park, and he was designing the Mall in Washington, D.C., at the time of his accidental death at 38 in 1852. A decade earlier, is really a famous place for landscape design horticulturist and the whole public park movement. Andrew Jackson Downing born in Newburgh was the earliest leader of this whole effort and the Park is named after him. Downing was who was behind the big push for Central Park in New York City and he is credited with the deign of the Washington Mall in the Nations capital. Downing Park in Newburgh was designed by Calvert Vaux a well know landscape artist from London who worked with Downing at their Landscape architectural practice in Newburgh. But, Downing died as a very young man in his mid thirties in a steamboat accident on the Hudson. Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted carried on Downing’s work in Central Park. The two with their two sons built this 37 acre park in the city of Newburgh named after their mentor.
