Baby Cakes: SANDWICHES AND PASTRIES
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This is a great cafe/eatery located next to Vassar College. It's sandwiches are served on home made bread and they are made with fresh ingrediants. There are also many vegan choices on the meno. There are a wide variety of drinks to chose from including coffee, smoothies, juice and flavored waters. Chica and I used to frequent this cafe, it's probably the best in the area. Every sandwich comes with a side salad. The Balsamic Vinegret is fantastic.

K & D Deli: DELI AT ITS BEST
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • K&D is a traditional deli with fantastic salads, soups and sandwhiches. It has three locations throughout the Poughkeepsie and Hyde Park area. I highly recomment either of the 3 locations. They staff is friendly and courteous and the prices are reasonable. The coffee here is out of this world, well worth the buck and a half for a 16 ounce cup.

Any of the soups are great, Ambrosia Salad and the coffee. My most recent favorite dish here is the cranberry walnut salad with grilled chicken.

Cinco de Mayo Mexican Restaurant: Spicy Seafood Soup
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • New Clean very basic place with friendly Mexican Staff. Both time I ate here the customers were Mexican only and the Mexican Juke Box was really belching out Mexican Music -- Ya that kind of place. The Steak Nachos photo below were really tasty huge serving lots of steak and very tasty two Mexican cheeses, black beans, avocado, plus guacamole. Tacos are the real Mexican type made of 10 different meats to choose from, steak, chicken, Pork, goat, shrimp, spicy mexican sasuage, tripe to name a few. The first time I was there it was so packed with Mexican customers that I shared a table with two construction workers who told me that this was the new in spot for the Mexican community.

Caldo Camaron a very tasty spicy soup made with Shrimp, claims, Crab and Octopus. At Cinco de Mayo it is just loaded with big shrimp, and you add fresh onions, cilantro and lime juice to taste. They bring a big plate of fresh Tortillas and crispy Tostadas to eat the soup with., meal in itself for sure.

Tell your friends you ate at...
Tell your friends you ate at the CIA--the Culinary Institute of America. It looks like any college campus--but it's one of the nation's foremost professional schools for chefs. The school runs several restaurants (in various formats: contemporary American, Italian, healthy, etc.) where students get to practice their skills and shower you with attention. The food is first-rate, and the service is, too (remember: it's kind of a 'captive' labor force). Two reminders: reservations are highly recommended (we got in only because of a cancellation) and it's not cheap (it's what you would pay in a restaurant of comparable quality). But it's well worth it.

    Bugaboo Creek: Bugaboo Creek
  • Satisfaction:
  • Bugaboo is a chain steak house. The wait is always terrible long but the food is worth the wait. I was first introduced to this place by my friend Gina and her husband Chris. They are addicted to the place and eat here once a week. Once you get over the wait for a table the service is good and the food is quite yummy. They have a large selection to choose from on the menu and the rinks are tasty.

I like the Bunyan Onion for an appetizer. It's just another name for a blooming onion. I just love the crispy crunchy fried onion pieces with the creamy, spicy diping sauce. The Creek's Calamari is also good. It's a differnt take on the version I am used to. They toss the rings with peppers and garlic. They serve it with a side of ranch dressing.

For dinner I always get a steak. I either get the Black Magic Steak, yummy with spicy seasonings or the Lodge Filet which is so tender and delicious. On the side I like some grilled onions or baked beans.

For dessert there is only one option for me: The Big Foot Chocolate Cookie. It's a huge chocolate chip cookie baked in a skillit and served with vanilla ice cream and a strawberry on top. It is so goey and delicious...I could start with dessert first and work my way backwards.

  • Chocolate & Strawberry Ice Cream in Waffle Bowls - Poughkeepsie

Cold Stone Creamery is a chain of ice cream shops. They have a variety of ice cream flavors. They specialize in mix-ins such as :cookie dough, brownie bits, candies, sprinles, nuts etc. They also have specialty cakes that you can pick out from the feezer or order a customized cake.

Chris and I stopped at this Cold Stone after some shopping in Poughkeepsie. I had an ice cream craving so he indulged me. I had chocolate ice cream in a waffle bowl..Yum! Chris had strawberry ice cream in a waffle bowl which he said was good. He's not a big Cold Stone fan but he was happy and enjoyed the waffle bowl.

I'm not a big fan of the mix ins so I stick to plain ice cream. I love chocolate but the cinnamon is a close second favorite for me. They make great waffle cones as well.

I have ordered cakes from other Cold Stione stoes and they have always been terrific.
