Tupelo: Slice of LES in Queens

by chodearm Updated Apr 4, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Yuki, my lady, use to live next door to this bar which we considered the best of the boro. She would walk by on her daily morning city voyage and a Dread wearing dude told her to come by that night, so naturally we accepted and dropped by. To our suprise they had a live experimental band and a fireplace ripping. The interior was detailed with a creative touch and had no cheesy factor to it. The beers were at least a dollar cheaper than the regular NY prices and the crowd seemed artistic not autistic. This place was the closest feel to non-queens style even though its in the queens locale. Seems to be more lying on the LES of Manahtten then across the river. Good address with Astoria Studios right next door. The music is eclectic so to wet many peoples palette. Actually deserves an out of the way visit.

    The Scene
In September 1999, two Greek hippie siblings opened the doors to Tupelo, their oh-so-cool East Village-style bar. Evan and Frank (who claim their last name is too unspellable to print) say they started up the hip, casual joint to be a hangout for locals as well as visitors from afar. In their renovated brick industrial building (next-door to an autoshop in the same row of buildings), they've successfully created a very inviting, low-key hideaway.

    The Draw
Inside the walled-in exposed brick, a fireplace full of sand holds one single, burning candle--but it may eventually be replaced with a TV. The bar was partially constructed out of some church doors that were being junked, which, along wth the randomly placed windows and red booths, give it a "found" feeling. Tupelo has everything going for it when it comes to comfort and creativity--including a relaxed, diverse crowd.
