If you like Mexican food then you must stop in here. I am not a fan of Mexican food but my father really enjoys it here. This family owned and operated restaurant makes all the ingredients and breads for their tortillas and burritos, by hand, fresh every day. The lunch menu features several kinds of enchiladas, tacos and burritos with optional hot sauces (enough to breathe flames). The lunch menu items plus tostados are offered as ala carte dinner fare. The main entrees for the dinner menu are comidas and chicken breasts and combinations of ala carte items. Again they offer optional hot sauces with a flammabilty warning. So, if you really enjoy that burning stomach and breath that is smoking and watering eyes, then you'll love this place like my dad does. They have specials and events that run on Cinco de Mayo and Dieciseis de Septiembre as well as coupons in the advertisement section of the local papers. This is a steakhouse with an Irish flare. It has worn wood and rustic looking furniture in an attempt to appear like an Irish pub. The walls have antiques and ships and oars and other nautical artifacts. They have divided the old house into three distinct dining areas: The Vineyard Room, The Library Room, The Main Dining Room; with decor appropriate to their names. The place is a family owned and operated business; second generation of people who own other restaurants in the Rochester area. The food is good. A quote from the owners: "Shamrock Jack's Menu is composed of all original recipes created by Chef/Owner Danny Petzing. Each of the assortments of premium grade steaks are cut to order and prepared with a unique grilling process that locks in flavor and natural juices". They have an extensive menu and you can see it on the website below. We have had lunch there several times and I usually order the roast beef or the turkey breast sandwich on hardroll with a side order soup and salad. Cost is about $15 per person for lunch and $25 for dinner.

My son and his girl friend are into Thai foods now. It was India food a few months ago. They found this very nice place in downtown Rochester that serves great Thai food. You start with a Spring Roll and a spicey Pho Soup to share and have Phat Phet with chicken for the main course. For dessert is Mango with sweet rice and several cups of hot tea. For less than $20 per person you can burn your lips and sear your throat and churn your stomach and say yum yum. If you like Thai food, that is. The decor is authentic Thai with lots of red and black. The staff is very low key and quiet but very attentive at the same time; unobtrusive is probably the best word. The food is served quickly and my son says it is delicious (so I will take his word for it). The three-level restaurant features views of the Genesee River and outdoor seating will be added this summer (2007).

Zebb's has one of the best thick burgers you have every tried. Fresh ground round with low fat, dual-cheeses melting over the edge, fresh greens and thick slice of sweet tomato, all on a freshly baked bun. This is a bar and grill; very casual. Friendly staff, friendly clientel and the area is not too bad during the day (not nearly as nice after 9pm). The food is the calling card for this restaurant which has been around western New York for ages. Besides this restaurant, they have similar places in Buffalo and Syracuse and they all serve great food. The restaurant has been voted Best Burger three times over the last decade. Besides the burgers, they have a full menu of foods: finger treats, soups, salads, club sandwiches, wraps and fajitas. They have a wide selection of premium beers or they can make you your favorite cocktail. They provide a kid's menu but I haven't seen many kids in this particular store. The hours are 11am to past midnight (but again, visitors would be advised to be safely on their way by 9pm). They are offering a buy-one-get-one-free if you vote for them for net year.

The old Lehigh Valley Depot, on the Genesee River, is now the newest home of one of the locally famous Dinosaur BBQ restaurants. Their menu is filled with pork items which I have a hard time with so I generally go with the spicey beef sandwiches or the huge chicken club sandwich they have. Add a side order of paprika potatoes and a couple dill pickles and I am good to go. A nice ice cold tea to wash it all down and I can use a $20 and get change back. They have added call-in, take-out so you can get a regular dinner to go if you are on the run. Dinner entertainment is a given on almost every night. This fact is a pretty big drawing card for this popular restaurant. It is always busy at dinner time and it is first-come, first-served. The clientel can seem a bit rough on some weekends (bikers love the hot stuff) but the restaurant has a good reputation and fights are few and far between. see the website below for feeding times and the full menu. the website also list upcoming entertainment.

This sweet shop has been in business for over 60 years. The family makes some of the best homemade chocolate treats in the Rochester area. Chocolate drops, peanut brittle, truffles, candy bars with jellies and nuts, white chocolate, dietary chocolate items and souvenier edition chocolate molds. They have seasonal specialties (Easter candy, chocolate/strawberry Santas) and candy-of-the-month features (dipped strawberries is June). The store is small and the one-man "factory" is in the back. If you can't get to the store , then you can call in an order and it will be delivered UPS. Now you can even order via the internet. If you are downtown Rochester and without transportation and have your family with you, then you might consider walking to Midtown Plaza and getting a good meal at Bill Gray's. But I would not venture there after 7pm. The restaurant is inside the mall gallery area and is a good place to get some good food at a reasonable price. You step up to the counter and make your order based on info from the menu board. Within five minutes, your meal is ready and you carry it over to one of the tables in the food court. The menu is mostly hamburgers, hot dogs, and chicken sandwiches with the normal array of extras (potato chips, french fries, onion rings). They also have a good selection of soda fountain desserts (ice cream cones, sundaes, banana splits). The highest priced chicken platter is under $10 including a drink (kids prices are under $5). So you can take a family here and not go broke and get some decent food. They have soups and salads for those who do not want meat products. This location also provides a nice breakfast menu: 2 Eggs and Grilled Roll with or without Home Fries and Sausage; or six French Toast Sticks with syrup and butter; or a Grilled Hard Roll, Toast and Home Fries. The food court is not very quiet nor is it very private and there is a lot of foot traffic through the area (watch your purse). The Grill restaurant within the Strathallan Hotel is a very nice, quiet and elegant setting. The name does not do justice to the atmosphere of the place; white linens on dark wood table settings with avante garde tableware. Every meal is a culinary adventure that the chef takes you on. There are standard items, to be sure, on the menu, but the house specialties for the day are usually the best treat. The host escorts you to your table and performs all the ettiquette tasks to get you and your mate seated in style. He then summons a table hostess to see to your needs; before dinner beverage, appetizers. She tells you the daily specials and indicates the favorites and takes your order. Within 15 minutes the hostess returns with a serving person to set the meal before you in Emily Post fashion. The prime rib and french onion soup are probably the local favorites here, but they have a fabulous Beef Wellington also. I like a side order plate of salad with oil and vinegar. There is an adjacent bar area where you can get any alcoholic drink you can think of and relax in a quiet, low-light area that invites you to linger for a while. The prices are in line with the style of the restaurant; high class. You can easily spend $40 per person for a dinner (not including alcoholic beverage, tax and tip). It is a very pleasant experience and worth every dollar. We have stayed here overnight a few times for reunions and wedding arrangements and the breakfast served here is also fantastic. Stacks of pancakes, fresh fruit, crepes, specialty omelets. Everything is served as if you are very special and it all tastes so good.
