Schoen Place

One fo the great ways to enjoy the canal is to stop at Schoen Place(located in Pittsford, NY) and take a boat ride or simply stroll down the pathway along the canal or ride your bike. Here there are many little shops close by to visit. There is also a boat you can take further up the canal in Fairport, NY. I prefer this one better to the one here at Schoen Place. You can choose either a dinner cruise or a 2 hr boat ride down the canal. It goes through one of the locks so you can experience and see for yourself how they work.

Rochester has several Festivals but the 2 must go sees are Corn Hill Festival held in July and Park Ave. Festival held in August. Here you can find some of the best arts and crafts for sale from some very talented artists.

It is a 2 day affair with music and food located right in the heart of Cornhill District in downtown Rochester just past the Blue Cross Arena. Many of the houses here are landmarks.

GEORGE EASTMAN HOUSE

Rochester is the home of the Eastman Kodak campany .

The picture is the home of George Eastman founder of Kodak who lived from 1854 to 1932. The house was built between 1902 and 1905 , 35000 sq. ft and with 50 rooms. It is a very nice house. George Eastman is heralded as the father of modern photography and the inventor of motion picture film.

It now houses the International Museum of Photography and Film and is the worlds oldest photography museum.

Kodak Inc.'s claim to fame , other than it was a very successful company, was the creation of cameras and films that made photography available to the general public .

There is a house tour and both temporary and permanent exhibits are on display.

Quality place to relax and take pictures if you like. Big man made lake in the middle. Many people come to swim in the pond during the summer and X-Country Ski in the winter.

Directions: Mendon Ponds Park. Either a state or county park. Most people know where it is. Right off of Clover.

Walk along and visit on the Erie Canal.
The canal was built in 1825 and has been a major contributing factor to Rochester growth and expansion during this time. As the canal was being built, new roads had to be constructed to bring in new supplies. The canal stretches about 363 miles.

When the canal was finished, it helped push the Western movement of American settlers. Just by looking at a map of New York State, one can see all the major cities that sprang up around it.

Directions: From Buffalo through Albany on the big spectrum. From Rochester, pick up the Erie Canal in Pittsford, Fairport, and Brockport. These locations have boat tours and restraunts on the canal.

Rochester is the site for her famous arrest in 1872 for trying to vote. The house has National Historic Landmark status. The Susan B Anthony district is a nine-block area around the Susan B Anthony House and Susan B Anthony Square. It is one of the last intact 19th century middle-class neighborhoods in the country and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Visit Highland Park, and or the Lilac Festival. This festival displays Rochester's world famous collection of Lilacs during the month of May.

The park has about 1,200 Lilac bushes with around 500 varieties. These range from the deepest purple to pure white. This festival is one of the reasons why Rochester is known as the 'Flower City'

**Rochester also known as the 'Flour City' due to all of the flour it once produced.
Usaully a pleasant time of the year (it can snow and has though) to walk throught he park. The Lilacs are really beautiful to look at, as well as all the gardens and collections of flowers.

Visit the High Falls District. This is the entertainment district downtown with several clubs, bars, and a couple breweries. High Falls Brewing Company is the fifth largest brewery in the nation. Some of it's beers are Genny Light, 12 Horse Ale, Honey Brown, and Michael Shea's. This is a great area to walk around whether it is at night or during the day.
You can walk on the bridge and see the actual High Falls and the Genesee Brewery in the distance. Several places to have lunch or dinner.

Visiting the George Eastman House (founder of Kodak).
George Eastman lived in the house from 1905-1932. Beautiful old mansion to visit.
The museum includes the restored house and gardens. The site also contains a archives building, research center, galleries, two theatres, and an education center. The museum displays the importance of photography and motion pictures over the past 150 years. George Eastman's life is interpreted as an influential industrialist and plilanthropist.

Great collection of photos and general photography.

Directions: From the 490, take the Culver Exit and head toward East Ave. Take a left on East Ave and the house will be on your right.
