Rye Things to Do

  • Playland

Playland is the historic amusement park of Rye. They have an assortment of rides for kids and adults as well as paddle boat rides, minature golf and concerts in the summer. It's always packed in the summer so be prepared for the crowds. My wife came here as a little girl as did her parents...this place will probably be around forever. The park is...

  • Playland Beach & Pool

Rye Beach is the closest beach to Playland and down from Oakland Beach. There is also a pool but we do not use it (Liz is not a fan of public pools and this one can get gross and for $6, I will use my own pool at home). In the summer there is a small fee to get on the beach($4) but walking the boardwalk is free. Lockers and beach umbrellas are...

  • Oakland Beach

Oakland Beach is one of our favorite places in Rye. We love to take walks along the water or just sit on a bench and enjoy the sunset.

  • Oakland Beach

Although Oakland Beach shares the same stretch of sand and water, it is divided by a "fence" and a separate beach from Rye Beach. The beach is a bit larger than Rye, and the price to enter the beach is also more expensive. The fee to this beach is $8. The beach also has chair and umbrealla rentals and like it's entrance fee, the fees for the...

  • Rye Pool

Just like Rye Beach, the pool is part of the Playland area. The entrance fee to the pool alone is $6 (and you can enter the beach for free after). Basically, they have a combo ticket you can purchase, if you go to the beach first, the pool is only $2 more, or if you go to the pool first, the beach is free. The pool does not allow any food or...

  • Rye Beach

Rye Beach is a very small public beach located within the "Playland" area. There is an entrance fee to this beach at a price of $4 (or, get the combo beach/pool for $6) You must purchase your ticket at the booth directly located in front of the beach entrance and it is here where you can also rent chairs and umbrellas for a small fee. There is also...

  • Farmer's Market

Rye has a Farmer's Market on Sunday in the back parking lots behind Purcgase Street. The market does have a nice selection of produce, cheeses, breads and baked goods but the prices are not great. We get better deals at Markets in Connecticut or by my Mother's House.

  • Shop & Snack Along Purchase Street

Purchase Street in Rye is filled with shopping and restaurants. We love to walk down the street , check out the shops and grab a snack or a meal. It's a cute town though it can be a bit snobbish at times.

  • Rye Town Park

Rye Town Park is a nice park with a small lake in the cnter. There is always peple walking, playing ball, feeding the ducks or just relaxing. We enjoy the park because it is never too crowded and provides a nice setting for a picnic in nice weather.

  • Our neighborhood pizza joint

Piazza Pizza is our local pizza joint not too far from home. They have a large variety of dishes to choose from. It's quite small though with only a few tables if you decide you want to eat in, but most people order to go. They have delivery service which is usually quick and the food always arrives piping hot. We've ordered many different pies and...

Rye is serviced by the Metro North New Haven line to/from Grand Central as well a points north to Stamford. There is frequent service making all stops as well as express service which makes limited stops. We don't take Metronorth too often as Ferni and I drive into the city on a daily basis, but on the days we need to take metronorth we like the...

This is a mens clothing store where they have good enough suits for the day to day. I will usually wait until they have a sale to pick another one up but to me it is their traveler shirts and ties that are the highlight here.

Rye Warnings and Dangers

  • The Out of Towners Invade

In the Sumer months the town of Rye and the beaches in particular are invaded with out of towners arriving by bus, train and car. Playland park, Rye Park, Rye Beach, Oakland Beach and the pools become jammed with masses of bodies. The crowds can be quite ridiculous cramming for a parking spot, looking for a patch of sand on the beach and packing...

  • Obey The Speed Limit

Trust me, when you are in Rye you need to obey the speed limit. The Rye cops just love to pull people over for the slightest infraction even if it's just one mile over the speed limit. Do yourself a favor and watch for the speed limit signs and keep it slow when in this town.

Our most recent walk through Rye Town Park yielding a first sighting that Spring was almost here. We spied two bright yellow daffodils growing by some rocks in the park. Watching the winter fade away and evidence of Spring begining to bloom always makes me happy.

Favorite thing: In the Fall when the sumer crowds are long gone.the beach is ours again. Liz and I are able to walk over to the beach and enjoy a nice stroll along the boardwalk, park or beach. The crisp fall air in our lungs is refreshing during our walks. Watching the leaves change in the park from green to gold, orange, red and brown is a reason why we love the Autumn.
