I have resided in the NYC area for over two decades, so in my 26th year I finally boarded the Staten Island Ferry. Not a dime out of my earnings went to this enjoyable cruise over to the Forgotten Boro. The boat will pull straight out, so listen here....facing the front, the left hand side will give you views of Brooklyn, Governors Island (recently aquired by the National Park system), and The Verrazzano Narrows Bridge. The right hand side will give you a perfect view of the Statue of Liberty, looking to the rear of the boat, Manhatten will be hazed over by the ferries exhaust.

Staten Island Railway
There is only one railway on Staten Island. It travels between Southern most Tottenville and Northern St. George, passing through residential towns along the way.
The train meets the Staten Island Ferry at St. George making it a popular route for Staten Islanders to get into the city.
The fare is currently $2. It's best to use the MetroCard. This fare will allow you a free transfer with any downtown Manhattan subway/bus within 2 hours of using the Metrocard.

Staten Island Ferry
The Staten Island Ferry navigates the waters between St. George on Staten Island and South Ferry in Manhattan.
This trip will take you approximately 25 minutes one way, with a distance of about 5 miles.
The fare is FREE both ways. You will be asked to get off the boat at either end and be allowed to re-board the ferry for a return trip if you wish.
The trip will give you excellent viewing and photo oppertunities of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Governors Island and the lower Manhattan skyline.
See the provided web site for schedules of the Staten Island Ferry
WARNING: As of this writing both the St. George and South Ferry Terminals are under construction. They are both fully functional but not esthetically pleasing to the eyes.
MetroPark, NJ - NJ Transit and Amtrak
About a 10 mintue drive from the Outerbridge Crossing is the Metropark Train Station. It has parking for 5,000 cars and serves both NJ Transit and Amtrak trains.
Trains going to Manhattan-Penn Station take about 40 minutes. For me to get to midtown Manhattan by NYC Transit it would take about 1 hour 45 min. A much faster route thru NJ, especially if your traveling from the South Shore.
You can also connect to a PATH train at Newark train station that will take you to lower Manhattan.
Amtrak has service to Washington DC and Boston as well as many other destinations from this station.
Round trip is about $11-12. Parking is $5 Mon-Fri and $2 on Sat or Sun. You can park longer than one day if you are planning a long trip via Amtrak.
Staten Island Ferry
The most fun way to reach Staten Island is by Ferry. You can catch the ferry in lower manhattan. You can take the number 4 & 5 train to Bowling Green. The station is a 2 minute walk. You can also take the number 1 train to the South Ferry Station or take the R & W to Whitehall Street. The ferry is free. You will pass close to the Statue of Liberty on your trip.

Newark Airport is Staten Islanders airport of choice. Approximately 25-30 mintues from anywhere on Staten Island, it is an easy trip to the airport. Newark is an International airport so flights come and go all over the world.
Continental Airlines uses Newark as one of their hubs. This means they fly just about everywhere DIRECT without having to change planes. For this reason, it is my favorite airline.
