Sterling Forest Things to Do

  • NEW YORK STATE RENAISSANCE FAIRE

This is a great celebration of the Renaissance. Muratori promised to bring me here after standing me up for my sister's family day event. I am so glad that we went. I was a bit annoyed that the one day I forgot to bring extra batteries, my camera died before taking a single picture. Luckily I came back a couple weeks later and was able to get loads...

  • NYRF Stewart & Arnold knife throwing...

2010 marks the triumphant return of my personal favorite show after a two year absents. If you like knives, jokes, and fun this is a must see. Watch a father and son throw knives at each other, different things, and doing various trick throws. If you get to the show early (which I highly recommend doing because, I saw this show twice this year and it...

  • NYRF Cast in Bronze

A new show for the 2010 year. Not sure if it will be around next year, but i kinda hope so.When the show first started I was not that impressed. The smaller bells sounded out of tune and the intro song had more electronic accompaniment then the actually bells. However, sticking it out the show turned out to be very good. All I can say is hearing...

  • NYRF Wench singers show

Now know as the Sirens of Sterling. Another of the shows that I will try and see every time I come to faire. A group of "wenches" sing old time songs that range from sweet and forlorn, to sasey and dripping with innuendo. Well worth the time to check them out. A few songs even have audience participation, so if you want to avoid this site on either...

  • NYRF Brids of Prey show

One of the few shows at fair that I will go see every year. It is a show that is both educational and entertaining. While you get to see these birds up close doing what they do the handler tells the audience a little bit about the bird such as natural habitat, foods, etc (with a few puns thrown in). As well as a little back story on the particular...

  • THE RENAISSANCE FAIRE-PERFORMANCES

One thing there is plenty of at the Renaissance Faire is free performances. One can hear all types of acapella theater, groups of people singing with traditional Renaissance instruments, you can see mini plays, dancing and last but not least, grown men playing in the mud. Adults and children alike will enjoy just about every performance the fair...

  • RENAISSANCE FAIRE-ANIMALS

There are a few opportunities for visitors to observe and interact with animals at the fair. There is a free petting zoo with about 4 animals, pony rides, and the bears. It costs $5 to ride the pony and $3 to see the bears. You do get a pass to come back and see the bears a second time so hold on to it in case they are sleeping the first time you...

  • RENAISSANCE FAIRE-GAMES

There are literally dozens of games here for adults and children to enjoy. Patrick's favorite was the bow and arrow shoot, but then again what little boy doesn't want to play with that. There are also crossbows, strong man, darts, frog toss etc, the usual games you see at a fair. For the adults there is knife throwing, which I tried, but was not...

Sterling Forest Restaurants

  • NYRF Faire food & drink

The food at faire can be rather pricey however, there are a few items that I think are worth the prices. Such as a giant turk leg, or steak on a stake. These items can be picked up at just about any shop in the Greenfield commons (food court) and or so tasty. Also in the Greenfield commons there are two shops that sell cheesecake on a stick (yes a...

  • HAVE A TURKEY LEG

While at the Renaissance Faire make sure you try out a variety of foods. I highly recommend the pickles. They are fantasitic. The turkey leg to go also looked rather delicious. I tried the potatoe soup in a bread bowl. The bowl was good but the soup was cold. The also have freshly made dragon chips (potatoe chips) and blooming onions. There is a...

Dar's shop is very popular with both those who frequent the faire in costume as well as the people who work at the faire. She makes all the clothing herself, and does all the the elaborate embroidering by hand. Her clothes are reasonable priced as far as garb goes at faire.

Part of Dar's charm is her and her staff. Very friendly and willing to help size you up so to speak. Just great all around people.

You can find mens and womens shirts, pants, vests, cloaks, dresses and skirts.

I personally have three shirts from this shop. One I pick up when I worked at faire and two others the year after to have a variety when I go to faire and I am not working.

What to buy: Here women can pick from a variety of dresses as well as under shirts for a bodice. However in my opinion where she excels is in her shirts for men. There are so many styles and colors to chose from. For almost any budget and taste.

What to pay: You can expect to pay about $55 and up on items from Dra. However she does have a meow card. What this card is if you buy four items from her store you can get a free shirt. The card can be used over however many years so you do not have to put down all that money at once.

Sterling Forest Tourist Traps

  • Wanderer001's Profile Photo

    by Wanderer001 Updated Jul 31, 2009

While the faire as a whole really is just a way for you to part with your money there are a few places that are worse then others.

To start wax dipped roses. There are shops that will dip a rose in wax that you pick up at fair and tell you that it will last forever. I say watch out they don't really last quite that long and will end up rotting from the inside out in a few weeks.

Swords/blades. Yes you can buy SLO (sword like objects) at faire. What that means is anything here at faire is either a stainless steel wall hanger or a "blunt" for stage combat. Don't be fooled by the term battle ready that might be thrown around.

There are also some other out right tourist trap shops where hawkers will try and get you to buy something from the shop that you really don't need just keep that in mind and keep your wallet close.

Unique Suggestions: I would say if you like blades it is worth checking out the SLOs just as long as you know what you are looking at. They can be fun to look at if that is your thing.

    Fun Alternatives: Some alternatives.

1)Wax dipped rose, just buy a real one and don't pay extra to have it dipped. You could also buy a feather, leather, glass, bronze, or stone rose. They might be a little more then the waxed dipped rose but they will last forever or at least if you don't have pets they will last longer. Cats seem to love the leather and feather ones.

2)Swords are a little harder to come up with an alternative for. At one point there was at least one shop that did sell really swords. By that I mean in the very technical term "real" which I am not going to even try to explain that here. Lets just say that if you are a person who would spend 2k and up for a blade and not order them out of magazines "real". I have heard rumors that they might be returning next year so I will update this if they do.

Star fire swords, good stage combate blades

This is what you will see being hawked at the front gates of the faire. It is well worth the price of $1 for a map of the faire as well at a list of the shows with there locations and times. Or they can be downloaded from their site Schedule, Map. Still, it could be the cheapest fan you buy at faire on a really hot day and or a sun visor.

  • NYRF show times

Many of the shows have multiple show times during the day. There is an unwritten rule that show after 5 tend to be bawdier then early shows. With the exceptions of the Birds of prey show and the Royal Joust. What this means is there might be some more in your face sexual innuendo, alcohol consumption, etc. It is mainly a way to get adults to see...
