    Syracuse has about 150,000...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Syracuse has about 150,000 residents within the city, and 500,000 total including
'Greater Syracuse', so we are fortunate to have an opera, theater, and full symphony. All are excellent evening activities, and tickets can generally be purchased the day before an event. www.syracuseopera.com, www.syracusesymphony.org, www.syracusestage.org

Try and get out to Green Lakes...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Try and get out to Green Lakes State Park. There is a beautiful lake there where you can walk around. It's probably a good 2 mile walk. On one end there is a beach for swimming.

The Great New York State Fair
The Great New York State Fair is located in suburban Syracuse during two weeks at the end of August and the beginning of September. The local custom is that after the State Fair ends, summer is over and Fall has begun. Even though the official end of Summer is about the 3rd week in September, not the 1st week.

    New York State Fair
This is really in Geddes, NY which is a suburb of Syracuse.

Several stages of live music playing country, rock and ethnic arrangements (state and national celebrities). 4-H style agricultural and animal displays and judging; bake-offs and jelly/jam contests. There are rows and rows of gaming booths for kids and adults ("com'on up 'n win a bear").

Midway rides are shipped and setup for the week. The local historical societies will have booths and displays and there are always a few politicians with handouts.
There are butter scupltures and fiddle players; photo cutouts to stick your head in and chalk caricatures you can have drawn. Ride a ferris wheel, a meery go round or a small, rickety roller coaster. The kids love the spook house and the duck pond.

All kinds of high cholesterol, high fat, high sugar, great tasting food is for sale along with their accompanying beverages. It is loud, it is crowded, it is dusty, it is great, it is the state fair.

Entry fee is $10 plus additional costs for rides (buy rolls of tickets) and for the games and the food. Kids under 13 are free. There is some handicap access. Restrooms are available as well as johnny on the spot portable potties.
    Parking is $5 per day.

The fair runs for a week around the Labor Day holiday. see the website below for exact times and dates for this year.

    to get there:
    State Fair Boulevard
I-90 NYS Thruway exit 39 and follow the brown signs

    Parking Meters w/out Heads
When I first drove my father around Marshall St., he exclaimed, "Good Lord, it's right out of "Cool Hand Luke!" Someone's cut the heads off all the parking meters!" Everyone in the car chuckled and exclaimed "What we got heere is a failure to communicate!" Yes, the meter steel poles still stick up out of the ground by the parking areas, but the heads have quite literally been cut off. This does NOT mean that parking is free however.

Visitors to the area should understand that parking kiosks are set up through out the streets, you must obtain a ticket from the kiosk machine (75 cents per hour, two hour maximum) and place the ticket on your dashboard. At times the kiosk will not be immediately noticeable--look around, and you will find it.
