Watertown Things to Do
This is an example where a city let there zoo go to pot and volunteers and donations are just starting to get it back on its feet again. (we visited in 2004),There are about 20-25 open-air cages (large fenced-in areas) where the animals can roam and have some semblance of "freedom". Trouble is there are only about 10 animals we could find in the...more
On the whole, the Victorian architecture throughout the City of Watertown is beautiful. The variety of homes that illustrate the spectrum of Victorian themes resonnate throughout from The Square, up Washington Street to Paddock and Flower Ave, from Massey to Gotham Streets. The winters are rough and many are in sad state, but overall the homes are...more

I don't think I have ever had a bad experience at an Applebee's. It is always a safe bet for a good meal in a strange town. The decor in this chain of restaurants is about the same from town to town; double entry door, foyer/receiving area, central bar with stools surrounded by groups of tables which are surrounded by booths on a raised floor area....more
Ponderosa restaurant is one of those steak houses that have menus-by-the-numbers. For example a No.1 might be a seafood platter and a No.2 a cheeseburger with fries and a No.3 might be grilled chicken with mashed potatoes. So you pick the numbers you want and the give little number tags and you pay. You take the number tags to your table and a...more
We had lunch here. It wasn't busy at all on a weekend morning. We were casually dressed and felt comfortable here. The lunch menu wasn't very large but we just wanted something light and coffee and dessert. So we had soup and salads. (don't recall the soup, so it must have been something normal like vegetable or chicken noodle.) The salads were...more

This is a fairly comprehensive mall with stores for all age groups and needs.
The directory includes Aeropostale, BestBuy, Bontons, Borders, Dicks, Footlocker, GAP, GNC, Hallmark, Kay Jewelers, KB Toys, Payless, Penneys, Radio Shack, Sears, Spencers, Victoria Secrets, Zales. There are about 70 stores and a half dozen food shops/restaurants.
There is a multi-screen cinema within the complex so you can drop the kids off at a movie while you spend time shopping.
In the mall promenades, there are often special events and entertainment especially during the holiday seasons. See the EVENTS option on the website below for the upcoming attractions.
The mall is a cool afternoon in the hot summer and a nice place to warm up in the cold Watertown winters (assuming that the snow is not too deep and keeps you at home).Related to:

Winters in Watertown are horrendous.Imagine 6 feet of snow accumulating in 48 hours. Or 10 feet in a week.Snow banks along the side of the road are 9 feet high, you cannot see around the corners at an intersection (if you are lucky enough to have your car on the road instead of buried under feet of snow). And if that sounds pleasant enough, make...more

Watertown Off The Beaten Path
We were on a "busy" trip where we had planned to see a lot of things in a short time.
Well, the best made plans often go astray.... so some sights did not pan out and we were in Watertown with an afternoon to spare.
If you are there and have the time, then go to Thompson Park and have a picnic or walk around or just sit on a bench and enjoy the scenery. We did.
There are playgrounds if you have kids and even a small zoo.Related to:

Favorite thing: Watertown is the unfortunate recipient of many of the worst storms that rumble from Canada across Lake Ontario and dump feet of snow on the area. It is not unheard of for a foot of snow to fall on the city in one afternoon during the dead of winter. Add to the general winter weather patterns the problem of lake-effect (water temperature versus land temperature) and prevelant winds from the lake and you get a location which has seen 6-feet of snow in one week.
If you don't have to travel to Watertown during the winter then consider yourself lucky.
If you do have to trave in the area in December through March then remember to have an emergency kit, blankets, matches, flashlight in your trunk. You may need them.Related to:
