Sampson State Park is a great place for campers and boaters.

There is a major marina in the park for access onto Seneca Lake. You can berth your ship there all year round if you have the funds to pay for it. Seneca Lake trout fishing is normally very good.

The camping facilities are huge; over 300 campsites. There are hiking trails in the woods and down the hills to the shore line of Sampson Park beach. There are ball fields and a camp store; restroom facilities scattered among the camping loops; a community room and a dumping station.

The park has picnic areas with grill-stands for the day-time visitors. The view from the picnic areas overlooking the lake are very nice. Autumn in the park is especially beautiful with all the color in the trees.

This is one of the open-all-year parks so you can enjoy the outdoors in winter as well as summer (some of the summer facilities like the community center are not open in winter).
There is a small Naval Museum adjacent to the camping area. It has artifacts of the days when the park was part of the Army and Navy Training Center.

There are no public transportation services in this rural area of Seneca County.

Traveling by taxi is an option but you will need to get the taxi in Geneva (Pat's Taxi... 315-789-8424) or in Seneca Falls (American Taxi... 315-568-1811); both of which are 15 miles away.

If you are handicapped, then Seneca Transit Services (315-869-2304) and Seneca ARC (315-539-5067) can be of service.

Greyhound provides access into/from Seneca county but the closest terminal is in Geneva, NY.

The most convenient way to get around the area is by car. The closest car rental is in Ovid, NY (NR Boyce... 607-869-3291); the next closest is Enterprise Rental in Geneva or Seneca Falls (http://www.enterprise.com). Automobile travel is generally along routes 96, 96A, 132, 139 and 414. All other highways are country roads.
Caution should be used when driving this area at night because there are no highway street lights except at major intersections.

Willard Warnings and Dangers

  • davecallahan's Profile Photo
    the area is mostly farmland

by davecallahan Written May 20, 2007

Willard, NY shows as being in the top 10% of safe places to visit in New York State according to the crime risk charts ("very low risk"). There are no registered sex offenders in this rural area.

It is a bit spooky at night because there are few public lights after dark and many of the farming families retire early also; so it is very dark on the backroads and highways.

But there is nothing to fear from a criminal standpoint. Just use your common sense and you should be able to have a pleasant visit to Willard.
