Fort Ticonderoga was an excellent choice of things to do. Its a neat place, beautiful views, with an incredible amount of history behind it. The grounds look and feel sacred which I suppose is appropriate as so many men lost their lives there. The museum area of the Fort houses numerous artifacts and was really quite interesting.

This is definitely a must-stop place when skiing Whiteface or fishing in the area. Stop early in the morning on your way to the slopes and get a great home-made filling meal that will cost way less and taste way better than you would pay at the ski resort. I would even say the fresh ingredients and portions are worth a drive up the hill from Lake Placid if you want to avoid the crowd and prices at some of those breakfast places.

Favorite Dish: We ate here two days and tried a few different things. I had the best biscuits and sausage gravy I have ever had, fluffy biscuits and a creamy, light, gravy (not gummy or thick like it is sometimes). The corned beef hash was homemade. The wheat toast was thick and everything my brother and sister-in-law had, eggs and bacon looked good too. I didn't get lunch but I saw burgers and sandwiches, salads, and nachos on the menu. They also had kid portions of all the breakfast items -- like 3 silver dollar pancakes instead of a full stack.

Whiteface is one of the highest ski places in the East (according to their own information) and they have added a whole new mountain this year to the already prolific trails. I skied lookout mountain this weekend and the new trail and it was AWESOME! It starts flat and has some great drops and turns and the conditions were so fabulous and the crowds were so minimal it felt like we had our own private mountain. Not to mention the fact that they hosted two Olympics and thanks to ORDA (Olympic Regional Development Authority) - they still host lots of events. They were running the World Cup of ski cross while we were there but the place is so big that it did not interfere with our fun. Also, since the kids and beginners areas are so separated from the intermediate and expert areas, every level of skier has their challenges and fun without getting tangled up with other levels.

Equipment: Rentals are available on-site or at Cunningham's Ski Barn in Lake Placid. Plenty of parking.
