I've always driven in and around Yonkers, which is conviently located to many of the major highways and thoroughfares including the Cross County Parkway, Route 100 and a few others.
Driving in and around Yonkers is fine, there is plenty of places to park whether metered or not and many of the shopping centers and restuarants have their own parking.

The travel time to/from Yonkers and to/from NYC is between 25-31 minutes. The Metro North is a nice way to traveling with nice seats, bathroom, etc.
