A great side trip while in Atlantic Beach is to the Beaufort waterfront.
Here they have many boats that run daily or hourly tours through the local waterways. We've taken the 'pirate ship', the catamaran for July 4 fireworks, and also the huge speed boat on different trips. All of our trips were a couple hours in length. Watch for wild horses on the island across the water from the waterfront (Carrot Island maybe?? I don't quite remember)... if you watch closely you might see one while on the docks. I know that the catamaran has much longer cruises to out on the remote portions of the lower outer banks which we hope to do someday.

We have also eaten down at the Beaufort waterfront a number of times and enjoyed the atmosphere. There are a number of shops along the waterfront which my wife was thrilled to check out.

    site of carolina city

the crystal coast visitor center is located on the site of carolina city. prior to the civil war carolina city was a popular summer resort town catering to visitors from new bern. during the civil war carolina city was home to confederate camps argyle and vance. carolina city had a large hotel that was used as a confederate hospital. in march 1862 union general john g. parke occupied carolina city and used it as his headquarters during the seige of fort macon. after the fall of fort macon parke burned the town and carolina city ceased to exist. today all that remains of carolina city is a historic marker on the grounds of the crystal coast visitor center.

the bogue banks has a beautiful atlantic beach. you can go to the beach at fort macon state park or at numerous beach accesses in the town of atlantic beach. atlantic beach is a summer resort town so prices are higher for hotels and restaurants in the busy summer season. i personally like to visit carolina beaches in the spring and the fall when prices are lower and the beaches are less crowded.
