No trip to North Carolina's Outer Banks would be complete without a visit to at least one lighthouse. The Hatteras Lighthouse located on Cape Hatteras is the largest of the Outer Banks Lighthouses and is a national monument now. Built in 1870, the Lighthouse was relocated to a safer location to protect it from the ocean. In addition to the...more
After you have climbed the 256 steps to the top you are rewarded with views like this. This view is looking south toward the point where the barrier island turn heading southwest. You can really see how untouched this land actually is. While up top, if you look down you can some times see deer and other critters roaming freely. Grab you camera, it...more
This view from Cape Hatteras lighthouse is looking north toward Avon, that is the small town you see in the distance. I'm sure on a much sunnier day than I had here the photos would be better, it was cloudy and rainy this day. Remember 256 step to the top is a what it take for these views.more
This lighthouse was the first lighthouse ever built in the USA to warn ships away from land. There were more than 600 ships that had gone down near the cape, this area was known as The Graveyard of the Atlantic. The first tower at 90ft was completed in 1803 but was named the worst lighthouse in the US by sea captains because the light was to dimm...more

My favorite place of all to go eat...has to be beyond any doubt the Tides restaurant.
The people at the Tides make you feel part of the family. They are warm, helpful and obviously love people
Favorite Dish: Steak definitely is the best:)
The best locally owned grocery store there is! Great fast service. They have every thing from good foods, meats, deli to beach chairs and tan lotion to any other supply you can think of. So stop by and pick up your supplies at Conner's Supermarket in Buxton NC.
I can't think of anything that would be noteworthy to put here...except for a notice to parents..please...PLEASE...DO NOT let your children swim alone..the riptides are very dangerous..always have someone go with your children when they swim..even if they are just walking through the surf...there are nurse sharks that can bite them and endanger them in just a couple inches of water. Teach your children safety and respect for the water.
I believe that if you are one to collect sea shells..you should also be one to go to the beach...beachcombing is a good exercise as well as a way to get to relax..try it..instead of goin to shops to buy what is free...

The beaches of Cape Hatteras are a piece of paradise on this earth we live on. Nowhere have I found a place to find peace and tranquility as I have here. Walking on the beach at about 1 a.m. is comparable to nothing else. The stars are like candle lights. The surf is soothing. Truly if you want to feel as if you have found someplace no one else has been..make sure you visit the beaches at about 1 a.m. on a clear night..stretch out a blanket...watch the stars...and prepare to become lost in paradise.
Fondest memory: I am planning on moving in the next couple of weeks. I am going to miss the ability to go to the beach as I want to. I will however realize what it is about the island I love by leaving it. I will miss what I have discovered about the island..how much it has become a big part of me. I will however have the ability to visit it anytime I wish..we are keeping the place we live in now.
