Favorite thing: Living in Charlotte is exciting because there is a spirit of change that always keeps things fresh and new. Being a "New South" city means that Charlotteans view themselves as on the rise and we're willing to put up with road construction and other growth issues to build a vibrant city.
Favorite thing: Charlotte's skyline is not as sweeping as those of Chicago or Hong Kong or Singapore, but it's certainly the most impressive in North Carolina. The Queen City is the second leading banking city in the United States behind only New York and most of the skyscrapers that you see are owned by the major banks. This picture is a bit outdated (I took it in 2001) and there is at least one additional skyscraper that has been added to the skyline since it was taken.
Throughout Charlotte, you'll find small touches of art, especially in the downtown area. I enjoy the art, but don't expect most of the locals to be incredibly artistic. Most of the money for all of this art comes from corporate dollars and doesn't necessarily reflect the city's artistic spirit as much as it reflects the fact that Charlotte's big businesses like to put their sponsorhip tags on public projects from their own corporate name recognition.
This photo is of the fountain in the Wachovia Tower Plaza.
Favorite thing: Located in a very exclusive portion of Charlotte is a virtual town within a town. It used to be a golf resort. Not it is almost an entirely self-contained area - and very exclusive. These monuments (four of them) bracked the large interchange where the city within a city is located.
Favorite thing: While we were walking around this area, we noticed they were putting fancy white table cloths on tables and sitting out food and drink (wine). As we left, a couple of musicians were walking up to play for this outside event. Charlotte is a very metropolitan area. Art is prevalent everywhere
As you wondered about this grassy area, you would encounter sounds that 'followed' you. In this case a frog. It would follow you the length of the rock wall croaking. This 'frog' water fountain is located by the wall with the travelling sound.
Fondest memory: In other instances, you would be 'followed' by the sound of a babbling brook. Very disconcerting the first time you encountered it.
Favorite thing: These bronze tablets were like pages torn from a book and scattered all over this grassy area as if a strong wind had ripped them from a book. I've selected this close up of one so you can see some of the wording on the pages.
Favorite thing: These are real locations and the mileage to get to them. However, look closely...they are also the names of authors of books. In this case "Pearl" and "Buck". A famous author. But, "Pearl" is also the name of a real town (in this case in Mississippi) and "Buck" is the name of a real town (in this case in Indiana). Beginning to get the idea??
See a sporting event. Charlotte has much to choose from: Football - Panthers http://www.cpanthers.com/ Basketball - Hornets http://www.nba.com/hornets/ or Sting (women) http://www.wnba.com/sting/ Baseball - Knights (minor league)http://www.aaaknights.com/ Hockey - Checkers (minor league) http://www.gocheckers.com/ Or for racing there's Lowe's Speedway in nearby Concord http://www.lowesmotorspeedway.com/index2.html or North Carolina Speedway in Rochingham http://www.northcarolinaspeedway.com/
Fondest memory: My recomendation is to go to either the minor league teams. Both are realitively inexpensive and tons of fun. I've never met someone who's gone and not had a good time.
Go Downtown! Charlotte's Downtown is awesome! Its clean and really gives this city a good name. Nice restaurants and shops and museums. The Imax is very cool to.
Fondest memory: The first time I really lived away from home, hours away from my parents was when I was here! I got to experienceliving in a city by myself!
Favorite thing: You can see from my pictures uptown that I tried to get as many clocks as I could get. I found this one in the suburbs not far from Mark's house.
Favorite thing: Here's another photo of The Green. It's an interesting place to stroll with some great artwork. These benches remind me of Gaudi's Parc Guell in Barcelona.
Favorite thing: Locals will refer to downtown Charlotte as "Uptown" or in recent years, I've begun to hear the phrase "Center City." There are signs like this one all over Uptown.
Favorite thing: A lot of old buildings are being renovated into office and residential spaces. This building on the corner of 6th and Church Streets is a good example.
Favorite thing: This shot was taken from the rooftop of an Uptown parking garage. I've found that you can get a lot of good pictures from public parking garages!
