Cajun Queen Another worthy restaurant is the Cajun Queen, one of the better Cajun restaurants outside of Louisiana. Featuring live jazz and zydeco, the Queen has blackened fish that will make you sing with joy. And the etoufee est incroyable! Theme: OtherDirections: Monroe (or is it 7th?) -- Charlotte has more road name changes than any city I've ever seen. You're almost guaranteed to be lost three times in your first month in town.

Ole Ole For reasons completely unknown to me, Charlotte excels in Spanish food. There are no less than three exquisite Spanish restuarants, and one tremendous Argentine steakhouse, which are three and one, respectively, more than Atlanta has. Ole Ole features a Spanish/Chilean flavour in excellent fashion. On King Street just outside of Dilworth, Ole Ole is top notch food at relatively reasonable prices. This is where my love for Spanish food began. Then I went to Spain.

Vinnie's. Incredible seafood -- probably the best steamed shrimp in any city that far from the ocean. The seafoody-grungy quality of Vinnie's during the day turns into a meat-market fiesta of blond (and newly blond) ex-sorority girls and the frat boys who love them. Good for a giggle, in other words. Theme: OtherDirections: Southend, on the corner of East and South.

The coffee is okay... I like the mudslides... it might be a little strong. The thing to this place is it's near UNCC, so it's a great place to go and read, or study, or even meet a friend. If you go to a place like Starbucks, there's no comfortable feeling... but you get that here. The walls are covered with things, the lights are very dim, and there are checkerboards in the back corner. :-) Leave a Comment Theme: CoffeehousePrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: Hwy. 49 and Harris BoulevardDirections: University area in Charlotte

Someone else on this site mentioned one awesome restaurant The Cajun Queen. Man that is one awesome place awesome food, great music, and it is in a pretty cool old building! Even though that is a great place there is 1 place I like better! TRIOS is a great restaurant near Pineville! Very creative cusine and a variety of choices for anyone! What I would call fusion cusine. Great combination of ingrediants and flavors! Great Apps.
Everything I have had here is wonderful. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherDirections: Between Pineville and Matthews near Carolina Place Mall.

The last two people to review this restaurant on a popular local website described it as "Cheers with great food" and "One of the best in Charlotte." The tripadvisor website rates it as 25th among 635 restaurants in Charlotte. Our own acemj, who lives in the city which (for my money) has the best array of "neighborhood joints" in America, says that it has a great neighborhood feel to it. I do not think that it is up to the standards set by Cheers on TV nor to the very real Bridgids in Philadelphia but it is a pretty good facsimile for an upstart Southern city trying to make its name in the world. The staff and the customers are genuinely friendly and helpful. It is actually a bit hard to find and there is almost no convenient parking which promotes its status as a neighborhood hangout, although not a lot of people come there just to hang out. If there is a Cliff Clavin there, I have not met him yet. But, there is a former pro ball player. I wonder if their prices have increased over the past five years. acemj marked the typical meal as going for under $10 in 2002 but I have never gotten out of there for less than $15 and I am usually closer to $20.
I actually have not found anything here yet which was not above average but I have also not been able to select a single favorite yet. Everyone urges the fried pickles on you and I tried one although I am not a pickle lover so one was plenty. I might tend to favor their burgers except for the fact that they have excellent sides. So, try anything, it will probably be better than average. About five blocks north of Trade and Tryon, then four blocks west but 4th Ward is pretty well cut up so you will probably have to ask for help finding it the first time, and maybe even the second.

I went to Appleby's for breakfast -- it's inside the Adam's Mark hotel, so it was very convenient. First morning, I ordered Carolina Morning Breakfast. It was huge and delicious, I could barely finish: biscuits, gravy, eggs, and grits. Their coffee is very good, too. Second morning, I chose Belgian Waffle with fresh strawberries. Again, it was very good. However, both mornings I have spend about $10 -- too expensive for breakfast, in my opinion. They did offer a great buffet for $8 or $9. I guess I should have chosen that.
Carolina Morning Breakfast -- beware of the quantity! :-) I was not hungry until supper! Coffee is very good! Also, surroundings are great -- you will really enjoy sitting down and enjoying your breakfast. Leave a Comment

This Spanish tapas wine bar is located just across the street from the Marriott Charlotte City Center. Good concept, lousy execution. The atmosphere is good, the service slow, and the food extremely expensive and unimpressive. The texture of the paella was terrible and had a taste reminiscent of dishwater. According to the website, this restaurant was the winner of the 2006 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence so maybe it was an off-night, but I don't plan on going back.

One of my favorite ways of eating in Spain was what we called "tasca hopping." Both Zaragoza and Madrid (the only places that I have been in Spain) had areas which were filled with street vendors and small food establishments where you would buy small servings of various foods, called "tapas." At a buffet, we would call it "grazing," but in these two cities you could eat one item here and stay for another or move a few feet to the next delicacy. The music was often too loud and the areas tend to get very crowded as the evenings wore on but it was great fun. Charlotte now has a restaurant which serves tapas and I love it although each selection will cost what an entire evening might have the last time that I was in Spain.
I actually have two favorites. The meat empanadillas (which as you Spanish scholars will recognize are small empanadas) are delicious with just enough Spanish seasoning to catch your attention and I usually eat an order or two of those because they help fill the stomach which helps keep me from trying everything on the menu. (In Spain, I could do that but in Charlotte I cannot afford it.) My other favorite is the eggplant fries. They are delicious without calling up any memories or pleasant associations but I think that they also are especially attractive to me because they are about the only eggplant preparation which I genuinely enjoy other than mousaka and because they remind me just a little bit of the fried zucchini of which I have not been able to find a good version since I left Crete the first time, way back in the last century. There are about a half-dozen restaurants and drive-ins still doing great business which were popular high school hangouts when we were in high school. The good news is that they made it on good food and service at decent prices then and they are still in business because they still provide good food with service and fair prices. The Bar-B-Q King passed its 50th anniversary this year and they assert that the menu has not changed in those 50 years. (The prices have increased a bit.) Pete Gianikis opened the Bar-B-Q King in 1959 and operated it continuously until he sold it to his brother and nephews just six years ago. You might guess from their name that barbecue is their specialty, and you would be right. Their barbecue style is what is often called "Eastern North Carolina." At the Bar-B-Q King, it starts with smoked pork or fried chicken. The pork is either sliced or chopped, according to your preference and a "secret" sauce, whose most prominent ingredients are tomato sauce and vinegar, is poured over it. Chicken is fried and then soaked in the barbecue sauce, which is made fresh every day. It is called Eastern North Carolina barbecue because it is "vinegar based." In addition to vinegar, which is definitely noticeable in the final product, the sauce contains brown sugar, tomato sauce, lemons, and several "secret" ingredients, primarily seasonings. They also sell some of the best homemade hushpuppies in the Charlotte area. This is a family operation and fits another stereotype from my youth which I do not think any long-time Charlottean would dispute. The majority of the really special restaurants in Charlotte during the 1960s and '70s were owned by people of Greek heritage. The second generation of the founding family still owns the Bar-B-Q King and on any given day, you are likely to find three generations working there.
