I will always choose a locally-owned place over a national chain, but I swear there are people who prefer the sometimes more polished look and familiarity of a chain. If that's the case, Bonefish Grill is a good choice for seafood. I went here with a bunch of bankers (figures!) and was admittedly surprised at how good the food was. They fly there fish in fresh daily and the preparations were not only creative, they were appropriately simple enough to allow the freshness of the fish shine through.
I had the Grilled Ahi Tuna, which was excellent. They also have Mahi Mahi, swordfish, grouper, salmon, trout, bass and others. And if you're not into fish, they also prepare good steaks, chicken and pork dishes. Leave a Comment Theme: SeafoodPrice: US$21-30 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: 10056 E. Pho Hoa is actually an international chain of Vietnamese restaurants. In Charlotte, the restaurant is located in the heart of one of the city's most ethnically diverse streets, Central Avenue. The interior is clean, bright and simple and most of the time, the clientele is a good mix of Vietnamese born and non-Vietnamese born.
I've been here five or six times and I've always gotten the same thing, Pho Chicken. In fact, I don't even think it's called that on the menu, but trust me, if you tell the waiter you want Pho with chicken, he'll understand. The soup is made up of a light broth, with vermicelli noodles, fresh basil and chicken. It's great! Also, if you like coffee, be sure to try the Vietnamese coffee, "Ca Phe Sua", which is made with sweetened condensed milk. Yum. Brazilian food is a dining experience. Just think meat, meat and more meat and you'll be in a carnivorous sort of heaven. All vegetarians stay away! The style of the meal is referred to as "rodizio" and basically you load up at the buffet first and then wait for the servers to bring you huge sword stuck slabs of meat that they'll carve up and place on your plate. Mmmmmm. I went there just before I went to Brazil in the fall of 2003, with a Bulgarian born, Belgian-raised, Charleston-living friend who once lived in Sao Paolo (sounds like a good VT candidate). It was great because of his fluency in Portuguese and his overall enthusiasm for the meal. We had a caipirinha to start off, which is normally made of a strong sugarcane-based liquor called cachaca and sugar and lime with ice. Unfortunately, Brazas used vodka instead of cachaca (apparently it's hard to come by). Then, I returned in March of 2004 with fellow VTer and Brazil lover, b1bob. Nat and I kept our cards upturned most of the night, which kept the meats coming. Our waitress was Spanish speaking and we had a good time talking with her in her native tongue (Nat more successfully than I). It was great to hear Nat's self-proclaimed "Tex-Mex" Spanish accent as he charmed our waitress. The meat server was Brazilian and Nat easily turned his internal linguistic switch and started rambling on in Portuguese, much to Paulo's surprise! Eating with Nat is always a pleasure because he is truly interested in not only the food, but the server, the history of the restaurant and the proper way to eat the meal. I guess that ol' boy has picked up some cultural awareness from all of his far-flung travels! ;-) Leave a Comment Theme: OtherPrice: US$21-30 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than averageAddress: 4508 E. Since Indian food is among my favorites, I've searched out all of the local Indian eateries and none is too exceptional. However, Woodlands is the best of the bunch. The restaurant specializes in South Indian fare and does it fairly well. The menu is completely vegetarian. Be warned, however, Indian food can be fairly spicy!
Masala Dosia (like a big Indian pancake with a spiced sauce), iddly (cream of wheat is steamed I think? and dipped in either a spiced sambaar or a minty coconut chutney), chana masala. They even have one North Indian specialty, Aloo Gobi. The original Knife & Fork opened in the 1960s, but sadly it closed a few years back. Bummer for me. I remember going here at 2 or 3 in the morning because it was the only place that was open still serving a greasy burger. The strictly "diner" style menu changed a bit when it reopened in 2003 under the ownership and direction of a New Yorker (gasp!), who goes by the name, "Otto" Graham. The interior was redone and now it looks like a cleaned up diner at best; a new place trying to look old, at worst. They added some slightly more high brow items on the menu and now serve alcohol, but all in all, the food is still good.
My first "revisit" to the new Knife & Fork was with fellow VTer b1bob in March of 2004. I figured this would be his kind of place and as it turns out, he enjoyed his meal. I've heard that the place still serves unbelievable mac and cheese, but I can confirm with certainty that the corn chowder is awesome. Still, I can't decided if the reincarnation is better or worse than the good, old, greasy spoon that once was . . . The Landmark is somewhat of a local institution in Charlotte. For a diner style joint, the food is good and in typical diner fashion the hours are accommodating. They stay open 24 hours on the weekends and until 3 am during the week. The interior is what you would expect; a breakfast style bar, booths and plenty of tables. The booths are all equipped with mini jukeboxes and the waitresses are usually old and very Southern. What's not to love?
Breakfast has always been my meal of choice, but the desserts here are what really has made the place famous. The pies are scrumptious and all on display in the glass case near the cash register at the front. I developed a love for fish tacos when I lived in San Diego and until a couple years ago, I had to fly to California to get a taste. However, Cabo Fish Taco came to my rescue when the owners (a couple young surfers named Rob and Barry from Virginia Beach) decided to open up this joint in NoDa (North Davidson Arts District).
Fish Tacos and a Tecate (Mexican beer) to wash it down. The chips and salsa are also good (and free with your meal). Leave a Comment Theme: OtherPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: 3201 N. Davidson Street
