    The cave

    Chimney Rock

The cave is an interesting stopping point. Located at the base of the stairs leading to Chimney Rock, a short flight of steps leads down into the cool dark cave. After hiking in near 100 degree temps all day, it was like being inside a refrigerator. It made for a great place to cool off.

    On top of Old Chimney

    Chimney Rock

Contrary to what the sign said, this was one of the best views in the park. After reaching the Chimney, I climbed yet more stairs in a futile attempt to reach the trail that connected to the falls. I found a stopping place about a hundred feet above the top of Chimney Rock. From here, the Chimney, the lake and the distant mountains were within view. There was no sign pointing to this spot, but it worked well for me.

    Chimney Rock Park

The sign pointing towards this observation point advertises this as the best view. I'm not sure why, since it seems that the point of taking this walk is to get to the top of the chimney. But, since signs never lie, I decided to climb an extra flight of stairs to the platform. This is the view that is supposed to be the greatest. Check out the picture and decide for yourself if its worth climbing additional stairs in order to see it.

    Pulpit Rock

    Chimney Rock

There are several sights to see as you climb the stairs to the top of Chimney Rock. One of them is Pulpit Rock, a large rock balanced on another rock. Its mildly interesting. But, more important, its a good place to stop and catch your breath before climbing more stairs.

    Lake Lure

Mountain lakes are always gorgeous and Lake Lure is no exception. There are many boating, swimming and fishing opportunities here, but I like it best simply for the views. If you want to get inspired to visit Lake Lure, go down to your local video store and rent the Jennifer Grey/Patrick Swayze film, Dirty Dancing to see some of the area's beauty on the big screen.
