    Cutting Edge Dive Research

    by grasshopper_6 Updated Apr 29, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Divers Alert Network Headquarters is here in Durham, as is the Duke University Hyperbaric Research Center ( Recompression Chambers used when divers get the"bends"). If you're a Scuba diver or pilot, these places are definitely worth stopping in for a look. These folks do cutting edge research into the science of differences in pressure affect the human body. Call DAN ahead of time and they may be able to arrange a tour of the hyperbaric facility.

    Penny's Bend Nature Preserve

by jmpncsu Written Apr 20, 2013

Penny's Bend Nature Preserve is an 84-acre preserve in northeast Durham. The bend is a horseshoe-shaped curve in the Eno River just upstream of where it flows into Falls Lake. The land is owned by the US Army Corps of Engineers and managed by the NC Botanical Gardens. Penny's Bend is a diabase sill, which is harder than surrounding rocks and less resistant to erosion. This resistance caused the river to flow around the sill. The soil from the diabase is more basic than that of surrounding areas and allows for unique and rare species of plants to grow on the preserve. Spring is a great time of year to visit Penny's Bend and see the beautiful wildflower blooms. Several rare species can be found here including Smooth Purple Coneflower, Blue Wild Indigo, Hoary Puccoon, and Dutchman's Breeches. From the parking area, the George Pyne Trail makes a loop, following the Eno River for three-quarters of the way. Near the northwestern property boundary, the trail leaves the river and heads up about fifty feet to a bluff and Little Blowing Rock, an outcrop with nice views of the river. The trail then crosses through a meadow before returning to the parking lot. Another trail, the Cash's Point Trail, splits off and cuts through the field before joining back with the main trail roughly in the middle of the horseshoe. Cash's Point is a memorial to Wayne & Hazel Cash who helped preserve the area. Another popular activity is fishing in the Eno River.

by savvygirl Written Aug 6, 2007

Treyburn country club is a upscale country club located 24 miles outside of Durham, NC inside a gated and meticulous residential community. It has a great swimming pool, tennis courts facility and walking paths throughout the course. The Golf Course was designed by Tom Fazio, is a 7,070 yard Championship Golf Course (Par 72), and was named "Best New Course" by Golf Digest. the locker room also has a "Michael Jordan" locker designated for the basketball legend himself. This is because MJ used to play the Treyburn course often.

While the East Campus is not as beautiful as the West Campus, there are still some nice sights to see, like this statue of Washington Duke.
