There are certain times of the year when the local gangs are "initiating" new members.
I found this out, luckily not 1st hand, but through people I worked with at the local hospital.
What these "want to be" gang members do,is drive around in the dark/dusk with no headlights on,when some kind person coming the other way see's this, they flash their headlights to prompt the other "forgetful" driver to put on the lights. What then happens is the "want to be" will shoot at the this kind person. Now I don't know if it's just to shoot the car or to inflict damage to the person but either way it scared the hell out of me and made me so nervous on my ride back home that I stopped working nights.
Just be aware.

There is a high crime rate in Durham, maybe not as high as some other American cities but recently, and with the help of the media, it has become an image problem for the city of Durham. Though there is some truth to the rumor of high crime here, dont' be afraid to go out and do anything if you find yourself in the area. Just be wary, if it looks sketchy lock your car doors. Better safe than sorry. There are some great areas in Durham though. Give this place a chance and you'll see one of the nicer parts of the Triangle show through.

be careful when you go to Durham, It does have a high crime rate. stay away from east Durham (that is where most of the gangs are at) try to be careful in Bragtown, the Dearborn dr. Cheek rd. and Alston ave. areas, the projects (you will know them when you see them) and Downtown at night.
anywhere you are be sure to lock your doors and carry your wallets in your front pocket.
I have lived here all my life and if you take my advice you will be fine.
