Take a day trip over to Ocracoke Island, the ferry is free, hold 30 cars and take 40 minutes from Hatteras to Ocracoke Island and 40 Minutes back. The ferry run about every 30 minutes all day from 5:00am to midnight during the Summer Schedule May 1 - Oct. 31, Winter is Nov. 1 - April 30 is the same. It's an easy trip, you can sit in your car or get out and take in the views.

The best way to get there is by car. The closest major airport is in Norfolk, Virginia wich is about a 3 hour drive. There is also a tiny airport for small private planes near by.
