One of the new aspects of Kannapolis, helping it rising from the ashes of the textile industry is the North Carolina Research Center (NCRC). A collaboration between multiple North Carolina universities, the center focuses on various aspects of human health. There are currently two main institutes; a Nutrition Center (headed by UNC-Chapel Hill), and the Plants for Human Health Institute (PHHI), brought up by NC State.

The research center has a lot of interesting science, and is eager to place a good face on the work being done there. The Institutes regularly sponsor seminars and talks by faculty, and the area is always welcoming visitors from the public to see the facilities and learn a bit about the work being done there. So if you have a free afternoon and want to feed your inner nerd, stop by and see the labs and scientists.

The Gem theater, in the Canon Mills area, is a wonderfully cute old theater. A single screen, it plays mostly family-oriented films. The theater is very friendly, a great place to take a date or kids and have a fun night out. There is a balcony in the theater, with decorations on either side and plush comfy seats.

The theater is also priced well to go out. With many theaters selling tickets for upwards of $12 these days, the Gem theater has tickets for $4, $3 for kids. Fresh popcorn runs for $2.50-$4, and sodas are ridiculously cheap as well. So it's affordable, as well as fun. Check it out, relax, and have a good time at the theaters again.

The Village Grill is a small place tucked into the Cannon Village area of Kannapolis. There are about a half dozen tables inside the grill, with some outdoor tables and umbrellas for when the weather cooperates. The interior is dedicated to the retro grill look, with oldies playing through the speakers and old advertisements lining the walls.

Their menu is simple, but true to a Southern grill/diner. I'm a fan of the sandwiches and burgers, but they also have salads and more substantial entrees. My favorite dish here is the Ranch burger. Double patty, bacon, grilled onions, Swiss cheese, and ranch dressing. Wow, my mouth waters just thinking about it. And it is served with a heaping plate of warm, crispy fries. It's a delicious lunch, and a great place to socialize during the midday hours.

The staff are friendly and inviting, ready with a smile and a quick refill of your water (or soda). Stop by and have a great lunch. It's worth it.
