    Stationed right in front of your hotel or house, walk up the beach a little, you will find one and swim there if you feel unsure of your ability. (During the peak season, May-August)
    It is best to ask when booking your dwelling, if it is a real safety issue for you.

    Watch the children play in the ocean

    High waves, some as high as 6', and a strong under-toe make a real hazzard for small children swimming. Lots of North Carolina beaches have no life guard handy. One must keep small children and even the very best swimmers under close watch at all times.
