Wright Memorial: Fernando and me, 1995

The Wright Memorial is the site of the first airplane flight in history on 17 December 1903. The memorial is run by the National Park Service. Rangers give a talk on the 1903 flight and explain the basics of flight: roll, pitch and yaw. Ironically, the original Wright Brothers airplane was taken by the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. In my opinion, that was tacky. The Wright Brothers 1903 plane should be moved back home to Kitty Hawk. Granted, more tourists are able to go to Washington to see it, but it was wrong to move it from North Carolina. I don't trust people who claim to do something for the greater good. On 6 August 1975, I went to the Wright Memorial for the first time. I was impressed that I was on holiday at where the very first flight took off (see the stone marker at the top of the 3d picture). I hadn't returned until a rainy day in 1992 when we brought Luc here. Three years later, Fernando and I took the museum tour and walked up the hill to the monument.

    Beaches

Up and down the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the beaches are a must. They are a must because the Gulf Stream keeps them warm throughout the summer and early autumn. Fishing is also good through here. Throughout North Carolina, the beaches are public property. That is, property owners, no matter how rich are prohibited by law from walling off the beaches from the public. However, be sure you don't mess with the endangered sea oats because that carries a hefty fine.
