Many feel that the setting for "The Andy Griffith Show," was based on Andy Griffith's (and my) hometown of Mount Airy, and there is good (but not official) reason to believe that. To really make this come true, visit Mount Airy during the last weekend of September. This family festival features activities and events for fans who long for the days when life was simple and the sheriff didn't carry a gun. Enjoy a bottle of pop while playing checkers, relax to music from many local bands playing the same songs that Andy grew up with. There is so much to do during the festival such as watching the parade, meeting the Special Guests, laughing at Colonel Tim's Talent Time, placing the high bid at a Silent Auction, or taking in all of the music at the many venues. Remember to take time to slow down to discover and enjoy what Mayberry means for you.
From the golf tournament which kicks off the festival on Thursday morning to singing the last song at the Blackmon Amphitheatre during the Mayberry Days Chapel on Sunday morning, this is about as close as Mount Airy comes to going full speed around the clock. There seems always to be something to do, watch, eat, and enjoy.
The festival goes on rain or shine so pack for just about any kind of late September weather.
Parking in downtown municipal parking lots is free during the festival.

This was the actual Mount Airy jail and Municipal Center for many years. It is now the office of Friendly Heating and Cooling, but the cells, com center and Justice of the Peace desk are open to visitors.

Favorite Dish: Here's a long time local institution. Open since 1923, the Snappy Lunch was actually frequented by Andy Griffith and even received a mention on the show. The hours are kind of odd: 5:45 am until 1:45 pm, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 5:45 am until 1:15 pm, Wednesday and Saturday.

Pilot Mountain, just outside of Mount Airy, and basis for Mayberry's neighboring town and rival: Mount Pilot. Watch out for the Fun Girls...
