Ocean Isle Beach Things to Do

  • The beach is about it

Ocean Isle is primarily beach house rentals with just a few hotels. There is little selection of restaurants in town and most are somewhat reasonably priced. There is a charge to walk on the pier so we didn't bother. The beaches are very clean and not overpopulated because this is not a hotel beach. There are a few beach shops but overall Ocean...

Ocean Isle Beach Restaurants

  • The Sugar Shack!!!! It's the best

The Sugar Shack is one of the best restaurants I've been to in the USA, and in several other countries. It's Jamaican food served by a very friendly, enthusiastic crew. Actually saying it's Jamaican food doesn't do it justice. The quality of the food is just amazing. I think whatever they would make there would be wonderful, no matter what country...

  • Be careful of hot days, Sharky's has no...

The food quality was good to poor and moderately priced ($10-$20) but it was extremely hot inside. Sharky's has no air conditioning and it was 95 outside, so it was easily over 100 inside and very crowded for evening dinner. People who struggle with stiffling heat should avoid this restaurant on hot days. One dinner table (there were three tables...

Ocean Isle Beach Nightlife

Only one kind of nightlife for me when I am visiting this area - it's called 'SEASIDE'. This is not some club, but instead, a natural experience that overwhelms all your senses. The smell of salt air; the sights and sounds of the ocean cresting and slashing against the beach; the touch of aquatic life and the coarseness of the sand between your toes; the taste of fresh seafood.
The colors of the sun setting are breath taking and can be very unique as the seasons change. Enjoy these early summer sunsets at the beach.

Dress Code: No socks, no shoes, no shirt (for some of us) - totally acceptable at this establishment. You may wear any attire you desire and no one will think any different.

When playing in the ocean, be sure not to drift too far out. The shrimp boats do not sell directly to tourists!

Ocean Isle Beach What to Pack

    Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Family Travel

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: My friend Tom made us some great gear for shell collecting - he cut the bottom out of a bucket and glue on a piece of clear plexiglass. When you put the bucket into the water, you can see below the surface glare.

Miscellaneous: Don't worry if you forget to pack something! There is a Wal-Mart in Shallotte!!!

The southeast region has an abundance of vegetation for you to enjoy. This close up photograph of a flower was taken in my parents yard using a digital camera.

Walk the piers at Ocean Isle or Sunset beaches at sunrise and sunset. This photograph was shot from the Sunset Beach pier at 0600 looking toward Ocean Isle beach. It is a lovely place to walk and run in the early morning hours. Everyone you meet is very friendly, happy to be alive and willing to share an early morning smile. I never missed a...
