Ocracoke Shopping

Tucked in a corner across the street from Ride the Wind, one can find this little gem. Even if you don't buy anything it's neat to meander through this old creaky floored house turned souvenir shop. you can find anything from maps of the island, books about the island, postcards, clothing, etc. The porch is really nice to sit on and you might just stumble across an Ocrakitty lazing about on the porch.

What to buy: They also feature pottery and woodwork by local artisans. And wood chimes and rugs.

What to pay: Typical prices for a souvenir shop. Nothing too expensive.

This shop is right on the corner of Silver Lake and NC 12. They sell all your typical beach bum stuff, hats, t-shirts, sandals, hemp necklaces, etc. but they also operate a stand across the street that rents kayaks by the hour, the half day, the day and the week. They even sponsor tours around the sound and the harbor. They're real nice and helpful and they have a great business.

What to buy: Ocracoke T-shirts.

What to pay: Typical surf shop prices

This shop is open March through November. It was not open in December when we were there.

The symbol of this shop is an old boat filled with shells that sits out front in the parking lot.

The reviews call is an old-fashioned, mom-and-pop souvenir shop (not the kind of tacky chain souvenir stores you see in bigger beach areas).

What to buy: It carries a large variety of merchandise including:

14-karat gold jewelry
Joan Perry sculptures
flotsam and jetsam
collectibles
toys and inexpensive trinkets for kids

For anything you can think of that you might need or you forgot go here. As I may have said in another tip, it's all pretty expensive compared to the mainland but the closest Food Lion is on Hatteras, I think.

What to buy: This is mainly a convenience store. You can get deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo whatever...but you can buy beach-y things here like umbrellas and kites if you so desire. Also, an essential to camping is ice. You can get that here too.

What to pay: It's expensive, about a dollar and half more on average than what you're used to.

If you love kites, this is the place to buy one. Kitty Hawk Kites has many locations in the Outer Banks from Corolla to Ocracoke Island. Plenty of fun things to find in here for beach fun and activities.
