don't forget the directions

by davecallahan

Unless you are one of those techies with the GPS whodingies, then you are going to need maps and an area guide. Rand McNally has some of the better (more accurate) maps of the Carolinas amd Frommers has a top-of-the-line guide to what to see and do. An they take up a lot less room and cost a lot less than those electronic gadgets. If you are in AAA, then you can get the maps from them but their guides are not as good as Frommers. Barnes and Nobles bookstores have a good selection of maps and guides.

Pack for all weathers

by toonsarah

You won't need any fancy clothes here (unless you plan on staying in a very upmarket hotel) but you do need to pack a variety of clothing to cope with the very mixed weather. In our two weeks in July we had quite a bit of rain but also some hot and sunny days. So pack layers, bring a waterproof jacket, and include good walking shoes for hikes and flip flops for the beach. You'll be able to buy most things, but don't forget your prescription medicines as always, and insect repellent and sun screen will also be useful. If you're driving you'll need a good road map - we used the AAA one which includes useful city plans

Golf bags, Pinehurst is home of the Golf Hall of Fame. Minature golf origninated in Fayetteville. Bring an umbrella, but leave metal cleated golf shoes in your bag (we don't want to hurt the turf)! Bug repellent is a great idea, there are plenty of ponds, lakes, and wetlands (swamps).

Be sure you have asthma medication at hand if you are bothered by ciggarette smoke! Jesse Helms has seen to it that every child is introduced to the cancer sticks before they're out of their playpens.

Any type will do, but the best kind to bring anywhere is one you can carry by yourself! Depending on where you're headed, bring a jacket and warm clothes for the mountains, a bathing suit for the beach, hiking shoes for the woods, etc. You can buy just about anything you need in local stores. Bring the best kind you've got, because we have lots of beautiful and idyllic natural scenery. There are many campsites available all over the state, but make sure you bring a water-proof tent, because you never know when there might be a shower or two. Bring a smile!:)

Take enough clothes for a week. All the houses have washers and dryers. Take easy walking shoes and beach shoes, summer clothing and some warm clothing as the nights can be cool and it is windy there. I would take the usual alcohol, band aids, peroxide, etc. The nearest hospitals are not so close. Just Dr's offices on the outer banks. Don't forget the toothpaste, hair dryers, and that sort of thing. Definately a video camera and still camera. Make sure you take extra batteries, and charge up the video batteries before you leave the house. You don't want to miss that great shot of the sunset. There are plenty of stores down there to buy batteries. Plenty of camping facilities all over the place down there.
