    Guided Walks

    Sign outside the Visitor's Center

The MAJOR thing to do on Pea Island is to visit the Pea Island Wildlife Preserve. I have tried to put most of my pictures and tips in that location (URL below)

This sign was outside the visitor's center. Unfortunately, we did not get there at 8 am for the guided walk.

    Bird Watching

    Pond from the trail

Pea Island was named for the wild pea vine which grows in there abundance. (Note - spelled with an A)

The refuge is a haven for more than 265 species of birds such as Canada and snow geese, more than 25 species of duck, tundra swan, heron, egret, tern, and many other birds that pass through during fall and spring migrations.

We walked out along the short North Pond trail, and we could see many ducks and swans and even some wading birds out there. There were binoculars on stands every so often along the trail. It was a 'handicapped accessible' trail which meant not only was it a smooth surface, but some of the binoculars were wheelchair height.

On the way back we met a group with a guide who was explaining to the folks in the group that they were seeing Lesser Scaups and how to tell the difference by the wing feathers.

View from the Oregon Inlet Bridge

Terry took this great shot from the Oregon Inlet Bridge which clearly shows you what beach access & Fishing mean to the people that come here. Sorry I love my truck way too much to take it down there and put my baby between the ocean and a 5 foot wide slit of sand to be washed away in 1 good unexpected wave from mother nature, then what a fishin' truller for a tow truck? I don't think so!

    Oregon Inlet, NC

This is the Oregon Inlet Bridge on highway 12 heading north toward Nags Head. There are a few places to pull off and park. So don't go to fast and stay on the road for Heaven sakes, these shoulders are very soft sand and your car will sink.
