Rockford: Small quiet casual corner with decent food

  • Its entrance is through a narrow wood stairs between 320 Glenwood Ave and a hair salon. It is a small quaint restaurant with two dining areas, one with a bar also considered 'smoking' area, the other bit away from the smoke. A table interestingly set at one of the door way between the two, so one person sits on this side of the wall, the other, other side.

Go there early, you may sit next to a window overlooking the trendy constantly changing Glenwood Ave (lined with many new restaurants now, from a warehouse kind of district years ago).

    The menu is rather interesting.

You can have an appetizer with banana and peanut butter, an ABC sandwich includes Smith Apple, bacons, and power sugar on top of the sandwich roll.

The grilled eggplant sandwich layered with eggplant, tomato slice, grilled cheese on top, then chopped basil, rather freshing.

They also have grilled portebella mushroom sandwich etc.

If you want something spicy, try the chowder, otherwise artichok tomato soup is mild.

Rub's BBQ: The best BBQ-Memphis Style
  • Satisfaction:

  • If you want the real BBQ go to Rub's BBQ. Kevin the owner is there to greet you everyday with a big smile and a pair of scissors to cut off your tie if you wear it into his place (only kidding). It is the best BBQ I have found since living in the great state of N. Carolina. The atmosphere is extremely casual and somewhat self service. The owner makes it fun for everyone. It is important to get there when they are open though. They are only open Monday-Friday from 11AM-2PM. So, make sure you come hungry and you'll definitely leave happy.

My favorite is the pulled pork sandwich basket with the sweet tea, green beans, and mac and cheese. I don't care for his baked beans too much, but they definitely aren't like my momma's either. Try them, you might like them. I prefer the green ones personally though.

Shaba Shabu: a surprisingly classy restaurant in a strip mall

  • The ambiance of the restaurant is reason enough to go, but the food puts it over the top. When we pulled up to the parking lot next to Taco Bell, I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised.

According to the website, Shaba is the Thai word for hibiscus, the tropical flower, and Shabu is swish in Japanese, referring to the restaurant's way of preparing beef, seafood, and veggies right at your table.

You could make it an inexpensive night out with a $10 entree, or you could splurge for the $40 kobe beef. With such a wide variety of well-prepared foods, it warrants more than one visit.

  • This place is great for great sushi. They have buy one get one free everyday. They are very affordable and delicious. If you're looking for a new sushi place try this one! It is definitely the best sushi especially for their prices. Worth every penny. Try the honeymoon roll it's my favorite. If you're looking for something spicy the marry roll is good, and if you just want your sushi cooked try the bagel roll. This place is somewhat trendy, but people where what ever they want here. Just don't show up in your man tank top and mess shorts.

Sushi Blues: The best crunchy rolls!

  • I am a huge sushi fan and I am constantly trying to find the best sushi. This place makes some of the best sushi I have had in the area. This place also is a hotspot for nightlife downtown- has a great bar with some really delicious coctails. On Tuesdays from 10pm to 12 midnight the sushi is half-price!

Crunch Rolls, but all the rolls are awesome!

  • On the newly gentrified Glenwood Ave in Raleigh, a popular Sushi place.

East (Japanese sushi) meets west (Jazz and Blues music in the background).

Many to choose from (see official website).

    I had at lunch time:
    Sushi, Sashimi, Shrimp Tempura $10.75
"1/2 order cucumber R, 3 pieces sushi, 4 pieces sashimi, shrimp tempura"
    The food was good.

Sushi Thai: Large selection of Sushi and Thai food

  • A relaxed place with boat shape sushi bar. Sushi comes in boats as well. Two locations, one here and one in Cary.

The Raleigh location has a much more elaborated deco: the tables in Cary location are all rather simple, but the ones in Raleigh are all w/ a fancy wood carved top (not sure if directly shipped from Thailand), then topped with a piece of glass.

The sushi is fresh. Besides common types of rolls and sashimi, they also offer sushi rolls with own twist, e.g., adding soft cheese etc - some people like it, while others do not.

    My favorite:
    - Sushi/Sashimi Boat for one $28
With sushi, sashimi and miso soup (OR salad).
This will be enough for a regular sushi lover, even enough for two for light eaters.

    - Pad Thai/Vegetables $8.95 (add shrimp, chicken or pork would be a bit more)
"Stir fried noodles with pad thai sauce, egg, bean sprouts and ground roasted peanuts"
Good but the sauce sometimes is a bit too sweet.

We tried some other stir-fried dishes, which are not too great.

See their official website for menu.

    Sushi Thai: $1-$2 Sushi

  • This place is has a nice atmosphere with great carved wooden tables that have plenty to look at while you wait for your meal. At night they have $1 and $2 sushi specials. It's great for a budget. The sushi is good, not amazing, but for the prices it is. You can have an entire meal of sushi with a beer for $10 . For those people who don't like Sushi, they also have a great Thai menu to select from.

My favorite is the eel roll. It's sweet and not raw. Mmmm Mmmm... Once you try it you'll never go back.

Tartines Bistro: Traditional provençale cuisine and charm
    daniela85
  • By daniela85 on March 24, 2003
  • Raleigh Page by daniela85
  • I went to Tartines for my 18th birthday and found it to accurately imitate a country French restaurant, but at a slightly higher price. Being one of only two French restaurants in Raleigh though, it is worth the price. The atmosphere is cozy and charming, and there is only one waitress who serves up to about eight tables. Expect a dinner to last about two hours, which should come into consideration when making a reservation. The food is delicious, and the menu changes quite often. Bread is brought to the table continuously, and a salad comes with every meal.

The main courses change frequently, but my favorite appetizer is definitely the canard paté. It's smooth and rich, and comes with delicious caramelized onions. There is also a mustard to spread on top, but it is very spicy so I prefer to do without.
