Homewood Nursery is a nursery and plant shop in North Raleigh. They have a great selection of plants and a beautifully landscaped outdoor area. But my favorite is their poinsettias during the holiday. The open house is the last Saturday before Thanksgiving in they have tens of thousands of poinsettias on display, most for sale, but some experimental varieties and a few that customers can vote on.

What to buy: Poinsettias! And other plants during other seasons.

What to pay: Poinsettias run $5 to $50 depending on the size.

Crabtree Valley Mall

Everything you could imagine is at Crabtree Valley Mall. Every above category is featured either in a department of one of the anchor stores or in its own specialty shop. Because of the number and diversity of stores, every price range is represented.

I found the store when I was out for a session of evening Mall shopping after a day at work in RTP. The service here was excellent and the staff were great and good fun too!

The main sales activity with me was done by Jeff Savelli - and unsurprisingly my money was taken by a Ticknor, in fact it was Blake Ticknor. The business seems to focus on having stores in Ohio, with just one in North Carolina. They have a good online catalogue too. I was impressed by the store and the clothes that they had on sale - quite a few good quality Italian shirts and jackets.

I have now made a second visit and the staff were as attentive as ever - and this time I was served by Jagger Ticknor. It was quite pleasant to speak to him and discover more about the store.

This was indeed a large and quite wonderful place to visit - I made two visits when i was in the area. Some good shops and excellentb places to eat.

The Mall opening hours are:

Monday - Saturday 10am - 9pm; Sunday 12noon - 6pm

As with many places like this, I am sure that stores all have different hours from time to time.

NOTE: I DO NOT SMOKE what-so-ever but went to this store to purchase an authentic, unusual North Carolina tobacco item (which turned out to be a pipe).

Pipes by George is an old-fashioned store, small in size but large in information and history and has been in the cigar, pipes and tobacco business for over 28 years.

They are one of the oldest full service, continually operating tobacconists in North Carolina. since 1975, and it is maintained with an eye toward preserving the ambiance of an olde tyme tobacconist shop. When you walk through our doors onto the rough hardwood floors, you smell tobacco and see hundreds of pipes, a walk-in cigar humidor, tinned and bulk tobaccos.

Pipes by George has been shipping products for many years.

Parking is available in the lot about 50 yards east of the store and next to the Jade Garden Chinese restaurant.

What to buy: Raleigh Store Hours:
Monday thru Friday - 10:00am--5:30pm
Saturday - 10:00am--5:00pm

All products offered are tobacco related and Pipes By George maintains a policy of no tobaccos, cigars, or accessories sold to minors under 18 years of age.

A list of items available are on their website but here's a sampling:

High Quality Pipes
Churchwardens
Cigars
Pipe Smoker's Primer
Cigarette tobacco and accessories
Pipe Tobaccos
Nasal Snuff
Pipe stands
Tobaccodors

And just about anything to do with playing Darts from boards to darts to accessories.

What to pay: Pipes from USD $5.50 to USD $450.00

Dechen Collections_Tibetan Store: Buddhists in Raleigh?

Dechen Collections

There was this amazingly cool Tibetan Buddhist shop that I wandered into with a friend the other day. I had never even noticed it before, but she knew of it and so we went in and checked it out. They have everything from jewelry to books and a huge selection of singing bowls from Tibet. Free Tibet bumper stickers, Indian Tabla drums, carved Buddhas and Dragons of all sizes. Anything Buddhist you'd want. I dug it.

What to buy: Singing Bowls for meditation, books, etc.

What to pay: Not too expensive...

Crabtree Mall - courtesy of b1bob

There are plenty of malls in the Triangle area. Here's a fairly comprehensive list:

Crabtree Valley Mall, an indoor mall and probably the biggest in Greater Raleigh.
The traffic in, out and around this mall is the worst Located at 4325 Glenwood Ave

Crossroads Mall, this is an outdoor strip mall type place and spans several square miles. Loads of stores like Best Buy and Marshall's as well as other specialty stores. Also a movie theater. Awful Traffic and weird traffic patterns in and out of the place. Crossroads Blvd. Off of Hwy 1/64 in Cary.

South Hills Right next to Crossroads Mall at 1201 Buck Jones Rd. in Cary, not nearly as big as Crossroads and older.

North Hills, newly renovated, has a Target, a movie theater, a total wine and more and various other stores. Traffic in and out is not that bad and there's a huge parking deck. Located on Six Forks Rd. in Raleigh just off the I-440 Beltline.

Cary Towne Center is located in Cary (obviously), a huge indoor mall with all manner of department stores and several outlying stores close by such as a Barnes and Nobles, Several Restaurants close by and a pretty extensive food court. Located on Cary Town Blvd. easily accesed from I-40.

My husband and I used to go here sometimes while driving between Charlotte and Greenville. Crabtree Valley Mall is definitely a nice mall. Some malls freak me out, but the atmosphere at this place is nice. :-)

There are a lot of nice stores here, but I especially remember this one that has an outdoor part to it where they sell plants... I always thought that was pretty cool.
